ORANGE – Orange Lutheran High is the focal point for the four-day, Magic Memorial Weekend Tournament that tips off Friday evening at 5 o’clock.

Hosting by the Compton Magic program, the event will be highlighted on Friday and Saturday by three eight-team “BattleCup Boost mini-tournaments” in the 17s, 16s and 15s divisions.

The top two seeds in the 17s division are the adidas Gauntlet powerhouses in the Compton Magic Elite and unbeaten (over eight games played in Irvine and Dallas) Dream Vision.

The Compton squad is led by 7-foot Rancho Christian junior Evan Mobley, the No. 1 prospect in the national class of 2020.

DreamVision’s lineup including Mobley’s Rancho Christian teammate, 6-3 guard Dominick Harris (already committed to Gonzaga), as well as 7-foot Makur Maker, who played as a senior this past season at Orange Lutheran.

Action wraps up Monday at Orange Lutheran in 13 divisions, with some games also being playing at Westminster High, the Momentus Center in Irvine, El Dorado High, Beckman High, Foothill High and Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
