CARTERSVILLE, Ga. – Only four of the league’s 40 teams got through the first Elite Youth Basketball League session unbeaten as play wrapped up Sunday afternoon in the Lakepoint Sporting Community Champions Center.

The Texas Titans, Alabama Fusion, Indy Heat and The Family (based in Michigan) each went 4-0 and 12 others lost just once.

The second session will be played May 10-12 in Indianapolis with the third two weekends later in Dallas.

EYBL competition concludes with the Peach Jam, July 10-14 in North Augusta, SC.

There were a multitude of candidates and I didn’t approach seeing every team over the weekend.

So, take that as the caveat.

But here are players that most impressed me over the weekend:

  Most Outstanding Player

    Cade Cunningham (6-foot-6/Texas Titans)

Next 10 (alphabetically)

   Jabri Abdur-Rahim (6-6/New Jersey Playaz)

 Paolo Banchero (6-9/Seattle Rotary)

  Nimari Burnett (6-3/Why Not)

   Josh Christopher (6-4/Vegas Elite)

  Michael Foster (6-9/Mac Irvin)

 Isaiah Jackson (6-9/The Family)

  Jalen Johnson (6-8/Phenom University)

  Micah Peavy (6-6/Pro Skills)

  Cam Thomas (6-3/Boo Williams)

    Ziaire Williams (6-7/Oakland Soldiers)

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
