Class of 2019 is well-repped at Beach City Hoops event

DOWNEY – Some of the better players from the Class of 2019 that are still in search of a college destination were on display Saturday at St. Pius X-St. Matthias Academy during the Beach City Hoops (in conjunction with Gamepoint-OC) Unsigned Senior Showcase.

There was a plethora of superb jump shooters in attendance, notably Mission League products Vince Fier (Mission Hills Alemany) and Alex Blanco (Notre Dame-Sherman Oaks) along with Quincy Adams (Hollywood).

A cluster of extremely quick point guards were in the building, too, led by the dynamic John Clausell (Leuzinger/PICTURED) who put on his usual display of end-to-end acceleration and putting-right-in-shooters’-hands playmaking.

Others of that ilk impressing Saturday were the Washington Prep and Crenshaw duos of Hassan Hughey and Bilal Mike and Shedrick Lockridge and Jayden Couch, respectively, as well as Coree Joseph (a standout as a junior at Diamond Ranch before spending his senior season at Eastvale Roosevelt).

Six-foot-five Frank Staine – a key figure in St. Anthony’s run to the CIF Southern Section Division I quarterfinals (where the Saints lost to Onyeka Okongwu and Chino Hills) – may have been the most “versatile” player.

He’s capable of playing multiple positions (maybe even a bit of “point guard”) at his college destination in the fall.

Other “mid-sized” prospects on hand who had strong moments included 6-6 Charles Williams III (La Costa Canyon), 6-5 Andre Batiste (La Mirada) and 6-5 Jalen Manson (St. John Bosco).

“Bigs” (“posts”) that had strong efforts – at both ends of the floor – during their two games apiece included 6-7 Steven Ebiriekwe (Crenshaw), 6-6 Chase Bowsher (Redondo), 6-8 Juwan Ganiyu (JSerra) and 6-6 Marquise Nelloms (St. Anthony).

Coaches from 15 NCAA Division II and NAIA, and community college, programs were in attendance.

Big props to Alex Carmon of Beach City Hoops, who is creating quite a niche for himself in the basketball video and events world while providing a lot of quality “exposure” opportunities for players throughout the west.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
