PASADENA – Southern California’s two-best boys’ basket teams hook up Saturday night at Pasadena City College for the first of what could eventually be three meetings this season.

Chatsworth Sierra Canyon (24-2) and Temecula Rancho Christian (22-4), No.’s 1 and 2 in the CIF Southern Section Division I ratings, hook up at 7:30 in the last contest of a triple-header.

The winner of the clash will be the No. 1 seed and the loser No. 2 when the Southern Section unveils its eight-team Open Division playoff field Sunday at noon (PT).

The teams could meet again in the February 23 Section title game (at Cal Baptist in Riverside) and for a third time during the State Southern Regional final on March 2 at a site to be determined.

Santa Clarita Christian faces Chula Vista Mater Dei at 4:30 and Ontario Colony takes on Valencia at 6 in the first two games played Saturday at PCC.

Sierra Canyon and Rancho Christian met in the first round of the 2018 Southern Section Open playoffs, with Sierra Canyon prevailing, 83-79, in Temecula.

Both programs are loaded with future college players, notably in brothers Isaiah (a senior who has signed with USC) and Evan (pictured/the No. 1 junior in the country) Mobley of Rancho Christian, as well seniors Cassius Stanley, K.J. Martin and Scotty Pippen Jr. (a point guard committed to Vanderbilt) of Sierra Canyon,

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
