Teachers’ strike puts hold on L.A. City rivalry

LAGUNA NIGUEL – The strike by the L.A. Unified School District’s teachers’ guild means that the next chapter in the biggest rivalry in Southern California high school hoops is going to be postponed for a while.

Westchester and Fairfax, No.’s 2 and 5, respectively, in the latest BurlisonOnBasketball SoCal Top 25, were slated to play in a Western League game at Fairfax Friday night.

But, while the first strike of the LAUSD’s teachers’ guild in 30 years is on-going, L.A. City athletic teams are not permitted to play or practice (under the direction of their coaches).

There are, however, plenty of other outstanding matchups this week – some of which could have impact not only on the outcome of league races but in terms of the makeup of seeding of the CIF Southern Section’s eight-team playoff field.

   Notably . . .

*No. 6 Mater Dei has Trinity League games scheduled at No. 11 Santa Margarita (Wednesday) and No. 13 St. John Bosco (Friday), and also plays No. 23 Camarillo Saturday at Cerritos College in Norwalk during the Rolling Hills Prep State Preview.

In other Trinity games of note, No. 12 Orange Lutheran plays host to St. John Bosco on Wednesday and No. 25 JSerra on Friday.

*No. 8 Etiwanda travels to No. 9 Damien Wednesday in a Baseline League showdown.

*Defending state-champion and top-ranked Sierra Canyon travels to No. 22 Windward Tuesday night in a Gold Coast League contest.

Windward Coach Colin Pfaff has the best 1-2 freshman punch in Southern California in center Kijani Wright (PICTURED) and guard Dylan Andrews.

*And, in another State Preview game at Cerritos College Saturday, No. 10 Rancho Verde faces No. 17 Long Beach Poly.

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
