NORWALK, Ca. – Seven teams in the BurlisonOnBasketball SoCal Top 25 are among the 14 squads participating in the Rolling Hills Prep/Scorebook Live State Preview Saturday at Cerritos Community College.

The highest-rated of those seven squads is No. 6 Santa Ana Mater Dei, which will take on No. 23 Camarillo, which is led by UCLA-bound Jaime Jaquez Jr. (PICTURED)

The Monarchs (21-1), who travel to Bellflower to play No. 13 St. John Bosco in a key Trinity League game Friday night, start three sophomores and two juniors.

Other games at the event involving two ranked squads are No. 15 Riverside Notre Dame vs. No. 21 Brentwood (12:30 p.m.,) and No. 10 Rancho Verde vs. No. 17 Long Beach Poly (2).

The outcome of each of those two games could impact the makeup and seeding of the CIF Southern Section Open Division’s eight-team playoff field that will be unveiled on Feb. 3.

Because of the L.A. City Unified School Districts’ teachers’ union strike, replacements from the Southern Section had to be found for L.A. City powers Westchester (No. 2) and Fairfax (No. 5).

Ontario Colony is subbing for Westchester against No. 18 Harvard-Westlake while Santa Monica replaces Fairfax while taking on unbeaten Utah powerhouse Wasatch Academy (No. 7 nationally).

The complete seven-game schedule:

11 a.m., Woodland Hills El Camino Real vs. San Pedro Rolling Hills Prep

12:30 p.m., No. 15 Riverside Notre Dame vs. No. 21 Los Angeles Brentwood School

2, No. 10 Moreno Valley Rancho Verde vs. No. 17 Long Beach Poly

3:30, Lakewood Mayfair vs. Playa del Rey St. Bernard

5, No. 6 Santa Ana Mater Dei vs. No. 23 Camarillo

7, No. 18 Studio City Harvard-Westlake vs. Ontario Colony

8:30, Santa Monica vs. Mt. Pleasant (UT) Wasatch Academy

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
