SPRINGFIELD, Ma. – Guard Al-Amir Dawes of the Patrick School (Hillside, NJ), who signed a National Letter of Intent with Clemson in November, scored 25 points and his team held off its Our Savior New American (Centereach, NY) counterpart, 66-65, Saturday night in Springfield College’s Blake Arena.

It was the last of seven games played during the third day of the Spalding HoopHall Classic.

One of the nation’s elite sophomore prospects, Jonathan Kuminga (PICTURED), had an opportunity to send the game into overtime for Our Savior but missed the back end of a 1-and-1 free-throw situation with 4.1 seconds remaining.

The 6-foot-8 Kuminga – a standout last June at the Pangos All-American Camp in Southern California and in New Jersey in October during the Pangos All-East Frosh/Soph Camp – scored 28 points while hitting four of eight attempts behind the arc.

Another sophomore, 6-9 Adam Sanogo, scored 10 points and grabbed 16 rebounds for Our Savior.

Inclement weather throughout the country (and, especially, in the east) forced the cancellation of two of the eight games originally on tap for Sunday.

Action is now set to begin at 12:30 p.m. (ET), with the class between Oak Hill Academy of Virginia and IMG Academy of Florida the 7:30 headliner.

In the other six games played Saturday:

Montverde (FL) Academy 69, Atlanta Holy Spirit 46: Six-eight Precious Achiuwa, one of the better unsigned seniors in the country, scored 13 points with 11rebounds and three assists in the victory.

A multitude of defenders also did a reasonable job of keeping another of the elite unsigned members of the Class of 2019 in check.

Six-five Anthony Edwards scored 18 of his game-high 24 points in the second half when any legit hopes of a comeback victory were well out of reach for Holy Spirit.

Six-seven Cade Cunningham, a junior transfer from Texas, did a fine job of running Montverde’s offense while scoring 10 points with five assists.

Montverde takes on Sierra Canyon of Southern California Monday afternoon in one of the HoopHall clashes that will be televised by the ESPN network.

WDC Gonzaga College 69, Olive Branch (MS) 56: Six-seven junior Terrance Williams scored 27 points and grabbed rebounds in the victory for Coach Stephen Turner’s squad.

Memphis signee D.J. Jefferies scored 22 points and blocked four shots for Olive Branch.

Norcross (GA) 75, Roselle (NJ) Catholic 55: Junior forward Brandon Boston (27) and University of Southern California-bound guard Kyle Sturdivant (21) combined for 48 points and seven 3s to pace the Georgia squad to the eased-up victory over its New Jersey counterpart.

Middle Village (NY) Christ the King 57, St. Louis Vashon 54: Junior guards Ryan Myers (22) and Lovel Smith (17) combined for 39 points and converted nine of 12 attempts from behind the arc for Coach Joe Arbitello’s victorious squad in a mild upset of one of the better teams in Missouri.

Manchester (CT) East Catholic 78, Warminster (PA) Archbishop Wood 60: Guards Jaylin Hunter (35) and Joey Reilly (29) combined to outscore Archbishop Wood by themselves in the Eagles’ victory.

Franklin Lakes (NJ) Ramapo 82, Windsor (CT) 68: Six-eleven Neal Quinn (a Lafayette signee in November) dominated the proceedings from Jump Street with 29 points – hitting 13 of 14 from the field – to go with 12 rebounds, four assists and three blocked shots.

Classmate K.C. Hunt (who plans to play baseball at Mississippi State) added 28 points and 15 rebounds for Ramapo

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
