REDONDO BEACH, Ca. – The Sacramento Sheldon High boys’ basketball squad represented the northern portion of California quite well Saturday night at Redondo Union High in the finale of the eight games played Saturday during the second and final day of the sixth Take Flight Challenge.

The Huskies were in control pretty much the entire game while knocking off Bishop Montgomery (No. 6 in last week’s BurlisonOnBasketball Top 25), 63-57, after leading by as many as 16 points in the second half.

There was a brutal portion of the game, however, as the Huskies’ 6-foot-11 Joshua Morgan (who signed with Long Beach State in November), suffered an injury to his left leg while setting a screen with 5:46 to go in the second quarter and his team up by a point.

The game was delayed by about 30 minutes as paramedics arrived to treat him and take him to the emergency room.

When play resumed – after the players were given a few minutes to warm up – the Huskies pushed their advantage to 10 points at intermission and the Knights (15-4) never got the deficit to below double figures until the final minute.

Juniors Xavior Brown and Marcus Bagley and senior Kaito Williams combined for 46 points for the Huskies while Bishop Montgomery guards combined for 24 points.

The eight games were split into sessions.

In the other three games of the late-afternoon session (which began at 4), No. 16 Harvard-Westlake (13-4) rolled past Mayfair, 71-45; No. 19 Notre Dame-Sherman Oaks (12-8) dominated Liberty (Henderson, NV), 74-58; and No. 21 Brentwood (17-1) held on to knock off Alemany, 65-58.

Harvard-Westlake was playing just its second game since junior Johnny Juzang (pictured) returned to the lineup after missing all of the season with a foot injury and then an infection in his left arm.

The 6-6 Juzang scored 26 points Saturday night and the Wolverines got strong defensive efforts from juniors Braise Dottin and Holden McRae, who combined to help limit Mayfair standout Josh Christopher to 15 points (on five of 16 from the field).

The Wolverines beat Notre Dame-SO the night before in a Mission League opener.

Notre Dame snapped a three -game losing streak (including its final two games in the Classic at Damien) while getting a combined 54 points from junior Ziaire Williams (33, with 25 in the first half) and Boston College-bound Julian Rishwain. They also combined for seven 3s (four of those by Rishwain).

Brentwood got double-figure scoring from senior forward Braelee Albert (16 points), senior post Finnley O’Rourke (11) and freshman Christian Moore (11).

  In the morning/early afternoon session:

Los Altos 86, Leuzinger 80: Oregon State-bound Jarod Lucas scored 42 points and Matthew Barrera added 15 as the Conquerors improved to 12-5.

Point guard Johnny Clausell led the Olympians (8-10) with 25 points while junior Amound Anderson added 21 (19 in the second half) and Damajay Washington 15.

Loyola 73, View Park 59: Seniors C.J. Jones (23), James Keefe (17) and Mason Butler (15) combined for 55 points as the Cubs improved to 16-4 with their 11th consecutive victory.

Windward 66, Chaminade 65: Freshman guard Dylan Andrews hit a 21-footer at the buzzer as the Wildcats improved to 15-3 under third-year Coach Colin Pfaff.

The Eagles (15-5) got a combined 18 points from sophomore guards Kenneth Simpson and Keith Higgins in the fourth quarter to go up by as many as five points but missed four free throws down the stretch to keep Windward within winning distance.

Junior Devin Tillis scored 23 points for Windward while Andrews added 16.

Junior center Abe Eagle had 14 points and 12 rebounds for the Eagles, with Simpson leading the way with 28 points and Higgins adding 15.

Crossroads 66, Culver City 64: Senior Ryan Blackmon scored a game-high 29 points but missed a 30-footer, while being double-teamed, that would have won it for the Centaurs.

Junior guard Miles Ceballos (son former NBA player Cedric Ceballos) led the Roadrunners with 20 points.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
