Three Monday night blowouts at SJB

BELLFLOWER – There wasn’t anything approaching suspense during the three games played at St. John Bosco High Monday evening during Day I of the boys’ basketball tournament it is co-hosting with Gahr High.

*In Game 1, Loyola turned a half-court advantage of eight points into 24 points after three quarters before cruising past Covina, 75-53.

*Game 2 saw the Long Beach Poly Jackrabbits get off to a bit of a wobbly start (trailing 8-1) before they kicked things into overdrive while having their way with Palisades, 80-41.

*Things were no less lopsided in the evening’s finale, as the host Braves (No. 2 in the BurlisonOnBasketball Top 25) rolled past Rancho Dominguez, 80-41, while running their record to 9-zip.

The Loyola Cubs (7-5) were led by the consummate “efficient” performance of senior James Keefe (PICTURED; he is headed to his parents’ alma mater, Stanford, where his sister currently plays volleyball).

The 6-foot-8 Keefe – whose dad, Adam, was an All-American with the Cardinals and a first-round pick of the Atlanta Hawks – played  approximately 22 minutes but hit 10 of 11 field goals for 20 points to go with 16 rebounds, five assists and a couple of blocked shots.

Coach Shelton Diggs’ Jackrabbits improved to 4-1 (they were the consolation champions at the Trevor Ariza/Westchester Tournament) via double-figure scoring from four players as senior Justin Rene led the way with 22 points, including four 3s, despite not playing in the fourth quarter.

Fourteen Braves got into their game, with six of them (led by senior Josh Adoh) scoring from eight to 18 points.

Senior guard Anthony Gomez scored 20 points for Rancho Dominguez.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
