Major tournaments dot the Southland this week

LAGUNA NIGUEL – Week III of the Southern California high school hoops season begins on Monday, with things getting hot and heavy with multiple tournaments on tap, many of those including several teams apiece from the latest BurlisonOnBasketball Top 25 rankings.

*Among those are the Trevor Ariza Tip-Off Classic that is being hosted by his alma mater, Westchester.

The host Comets are No. 6 in the Top 25 and open vs. Cleveland Tuesday at 7:20 p.m.

Among the others in the field are No.’s 8 Bishop Montgomery (Monday, 7:20, vs. West Torrance), 11 Washington Prep (Tuesday, 6, vs. A. Hawkins), 15 Notre Dame-Riverside (Monday, 6, vs. South East) and 19 Long Beach Poly (Monday, 3:15., vs. Van Nuys).

*The 17th Rose City Roundball Classic is hosted by Maranatha High. Its field includes No.’s 4 Fairfax and 18 Riverside Poly. They’re in opposite brackets and could meet in Saturday night’s championship game.

*The Battle Zone, hosted by Centennial in Corona, has a 16-team field that includes seven teams in the Top 25: No.’s 2 Rancho Christian (opens Tuesday at 6 o’clock against Eisenhower), 5 Mission Bay (vs. No. 20 Rancho Verde Monday at 7:30), 9 Centennial (Tuesday at 7:30 against San Bernardino), 10 Etiwanda (Tuesday at 4:30 vs. Santa Clarita Christian), 21 Chino Hills (Monday at 4:30 vs. Highland) and 23 Orange Lutheran (at home Tuesday, 7, vs. Hacienda Heights Los Altos).

Defending State Division I champion Chino Hills is led by USC-bound Onyeka Okongwu, California’s Player of the Year as a junior.
