LAGUNA NIGUEL – The first week of the Southern California high school hoops season was highlighted by significant victories in quite competitive tournaments by Fairfax, Camarillo and Etiwanda.
The Lions came away with the title of the best of the events, the Ryse Williams/Pac Shores at Redondo Union High, highlighted by a semifinal victory over Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks and then toppling Bishop Montgomery, with UNLV-bound guard Ethan Anderson picking up Most Valuable Player honors.
Junior Camren Pierce was the MVP as Etiwanda knocked off then-No. 17 Rancho Verde (after a win over Colony in the semifinal) for the Inland-Empire crown at Rancho Cucamonga High.
The biggest championship upset came as Camarillo, behind UCLA signee Jaime Jaquez’s 40 points, dropped Damien in the Alemany Weekend Tipoff Classic Saturday night.
Jaquez (PICTURED) averaged 37.3 points over his team’s three games.
