WEST DEPTFORD, NJ – The last stop on the Pangos “All Frosh/Soph Camp” tour got off to a dazzling start Saturday, with multiple standouts from the Classes of 2021 and ’22 in the “All-East” portion of the tour at the Riverwinds Community Center.
Among those were a couple of 6-foot-8 sophomores who came into the camp already loaded with Class of 2021 national kudos in Jonathan Kuminga (who is attending Our Savior American in New York after playing for Huntington Prep in West Virginia as a freshman) and Trey Patterson of Rutgers Prep in New Jersey.
Kuminga played well at the Pangos All-American Camp last June in Southern California while Patterson is making his third appearance at the All-East Camp.
Two guards from the Class of 2022 who participated in the USA Basketball mini camp in Colorado Springs earlier this month were equal parts spectacular and efficient during their camp action Saturday.
Zion Cruz (Jersey City Hudson Catholic) and Jameel Brown (Haverford School in Pennsylvania) are their names and they used this platform Saturday to demonstrate succinctly why they are among the very best backcourt prospects in the country who have yet to play a “real” high school game.
But the “standout among standouts” Saturday was a 6-foot-9 sophomore.
Micawber Etienne, who is from New York but attends Suffield Academy in Connecticut, used his 6-9 frame and quick bounce to dunk pretty much every basketball that came within his grasp Saturday while playing for the “Georgetown” camp squad.
Etienne (PICTURED), who also plays for the PSA Cardinals (one of the most high-profile club programs on the grassroots circuit), is on target to have a dominant sophomore season and become one of the fastest-rising prospects on the Nike/EYBL circuit with the Cardinals next spring and summer.
The second day of Pangos action gets underway Sunday morning at 9:30 with Top 50 and Top 25 all-star clashes (which often morph into “Top 60” and “Top 30”) set to tip off at 1:15 and 2:15 p.m., respectively.
