DALLAS – The Pangos All-South Frosh/Soph Camp ended up Sunday afternoon pretty much the say it began with its first game roughly 24 hours before – with Arthur Kaluma and K.J. Adams the best among the 260 or so players in attendance at the Drive Sports Facility.

Kaluma and Adams (PICTURED) scored 17 points and grabbed four rebounds apiece to help the squad wearing white jerseys cruise past the dark jersey crew, 92-67, in the Crème of the Crop Top 30 Game that wrapped up the Dinos Trigonis-fronted event that was once again an ideal showcase for the better Texas players from this coming season’s freshmen and sophomore classes.

It was the second of the four stops on the Pangos “Frosh/Soph” tour.

Things opened with the West version of the camp on Sept. 22&23 (Westminster High in Southern California) and continue in Chicago next Saturday and Sunday for the All-Midwest Camp and then conclude on Oct. 27&28 with the All-East Camp in Thorofare, NJ.

Among those also turning in quality performances (with most of the players in the game only getting 15 to 20 minutes of action, at best) for the winning team were sophomore Alec Zambie (eight points and five rebounds) and freshman Nick Smith (11 points).

Freshman Jordan Walsh and sophomore Joseph Venzant scored 11 and 10 points, respectively, for the dark jerseys.

The “theme” of this camp was illustrated oh-so-well via the all-star (Top 30 and Top 60) games – size. And a lot of it.

There were 16 players who were listed at 6-foot-7 or taller on the two all-star rosters, with nine of those 6-9 or taller.

Among those were six players from the classes of 2022 and 2023 who were listed at least 6-10.

Immediately following the conclusion of the Top 30 game Sunday afternoon, Kaluma (overall camp) and Adams (Top 30 Crème of the Crop) were announced as the two award winners by Trigonis.

Sophomore guards Devin Askew (Santa Ana, CA, Mater Dei) and Isa Silva (Carmichael, CA, Jesuit) were similarly honored at the Pangos All-West Camp last month.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
