PLAYA DEL REY, Ca. – The first-ever SoCal Clash – a game between some of Southern California’s best boys’ basketball players in the high school Class of 2019 against their 2020 counterparts – is set for 2 o’clock Sunday afternoon at St. Bernard High (9100 Falmouth Ave. in Playa del Rey, near LAX).

Two of the players set to play for the 2019 squad are Santa Margarita’s Jake Kyman and Max Agbonkpolo, who have committed to UCLA and USC, respectively.

Admission is $5 for adults (18 and older) and $3 for students.

Among the others scheduled to play for the 2019 team are Julien Franklin (Villa Park/committed to Oregon State), all-L.A. City selections Jordan Brinson (Westchester) and Robert McRae (Fairfax), as well as all-Southern Section choices in Jonathan Salazar (St. John Bosco), Jeremiah Turley (Westchester) Kenyon Martin Jr. (Sierra Canyon), Marquise Nelloms (St. Anthony), as well as Oscar Lopez – an integral part of the Bishop Montgomery squad that lost only to Sierra Canyon last season and will challenge for Southern Section and State titles in 2019.

Two others on the 2019 roster are standouts from Saturday’s Hoops by Ugland Skill Summit, guards Jarred Hyder (Damien) and Justin Rene (Long Beach Poly).

Three players who played quite well at the HBU Skills Summit, guards Keith Dinwiddie (Culver City/PICTURED) and Atin Wright (Fairmont Prep), as well as center Bradley Ezewiro (Bishop Montgomery), are among the players on the 2020 roster.

Others include all-L.A. City choice Demetrius Calip (Taft), Paris Dawson and Jaylen Clark (Corona Centennial), Quincy McGriff (Santa Monica), Justin Williams (JSerra), Jaren Johnson (Lynwood), Nick Bowden (St. Bernard), Jahvy Medearis (Cantwell-Sacred Heart) and Yassine Gharram (El Cajon Foothills Christian).

The game is being produced by Alex Carmon (Beach City Hoops) and Devin Ugland (Hoops by Ugland).

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
