PLAYA DEL REY, Ca. – Santa Margarita High’s Max Agbonkpolo and Jake Kyman combined for 41 points and 12 rebounds to help the Class of 2019 squad out-run its 2020 counterpart, 161-143, Sunday afternoon in the first-ever boys basketball SoCal Clash at St. Bernard High.

The 6-foot-8 Agbonkpolo, who plans to USC with USC in November, scored 22 points (16 of those in the first half) and grabbed five rebounds while Kyman (bound for UCLA) added 19 points to go with seven rebounds and seven assists.

Forward K.J. Martin (PICTURED), who helped lead Sierra Canyon to the State Open Division championship last March, scored 31 points (hitting 14 of 17 layup or dunk attempts) to go with seven rebounds and was selected the winning team’s Most Outstanding Player.

Earning the same honor for the Class of 2020 was guard Keith Dinwiddie (who attended Culver City as a sophomore but may be bound for Fairfax High for the 2018-19 season), who scored a game-high 38 points – 25 of those coming in the second quarter on seven 3s and two layups.

Dinwiddie, who was terrific at the first-ever Hoops by Ugland Skills Summit in Irvine Saturday, also grabbed five rebounds to go with five assists.

St. John Bosco’s Jonathan Salazar added 11 points and eight rebounds for the Class of 2019, which overcame a four-point deficit at intermission. The game was played with 10-minute quarters.

Bishop Montgomery’s 6-foot-7 Bradley Ezewiro (with 19 points and eight rebounds) was the most forceful inside presence for the Class of 2020.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
