SANTA ANA, Ca. – Some of the west’s best prospects in the Class of 2021 were among the wealth of quality players on display Sunday during the West Coast Elite’s End of Summer High School Camp at Mater Dei High.
The two most touted “big” sophomores in the west, Nathan Bittle (Crater in Oregon) and Wilhelm Breidenbach (Mater Dei/PICTURED), matched up in the first game Sunday morning.
And, although Breidebach’s team (USC) prevailed over Bittle’s squad (UCLA), each had terrific moments at both ends of the floor.
Briedenbach’s team also included three of camp standouts in his Mater Dei teammate and classmate, point guard Devin Askew, as well as 2019 swingman Elijah Carter (Bakersfield Independence) and 2020 “wing” Judah Brown (Newport Beach’s Pacifica Christian, where he was ineligible as a sophomore).
One of Bittle’s camp teammates, Nick Davidson, had a strong summer with both his high school (Santa Margarita) and club (WCE 15s) teams.
And he showed Sunday why he, too, is among the very best the west has to offer in “bigs” from the Class of 2021.
He’s likely to join seniors Jake Kyman, Max Agbonkpolo and Shengze Li in a starting lineup with four players 6-foot-7 or taller for the Eagles this season.
Two other standouts on the USC camp team were Riverside Poly guards Lamont Butler (one of the best PGs in the west Class of 2020) and Jamal Briscoe (Class of 2019 and Butler’s first cousin a transfer from Gardena Serra).
Askew – possible the No. 1 PG in the West for 2021 – and Butler also had a nice head-up battle for much of the UCLA-USC game.
The best scorer in the camp was another member of the “UCLA” squad, 6-3 Malik Thomas (La Verne Damien) who also numbers among the very best in Class of 2021 in the region.
Among other camp standouts were 2020 guards Aidan Prukop and Ryan Evans (Mater Dei); 2020 forwards Chibuzo Agbo and Luke Haupt (San Diego St. Augustine); 2021 forward Harry Hornery (Mater Dei); 2020 guard Dillon DePina (Northridge Heritage Christian); 2019 forward Elijah Seales (Bakersfield Foothill); 2020 forward Jadon Jones (a recent transfer from Montebello’s Cantwell-Sacred Heart to Long Beach St. Anthony); 2020 guard Jordan Montgomery (Temecula Rancho Christian); and guards Christian James (Class of 2019) and Scotty Washington (2021) of Bellflower St. John Bosco; 2019 guard Will Pluma (Chino Hills); and 2022 forward Randi Ovalle (San Gabriel Academy).
