LADERA RANCH, Ca. – The Compton Magic 17U squad made it 2-for-2 in two weekends Sunday afternoon at the Ladera Ranch Sports Center.
Onyeka Okongwu, the State Player of the Year after leading his Chino Hills High to a State Division I championship last March in Sacramento, averaged 16.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 4.0 blocked shots in leading the Magic to victories over the OSA Crusaders (from Nebraska), 73-69, in a semifinal and the Massachusetts Rivals, 58-57, for the championship in the gold bracket of the five-day adidas Summer Championships.
The week before Magic director and founder Etop Udo-Ema’s program bagged the adidas Gauntlet Division championship in New York.
Six-foot-11 Evan Mobley (Rancho Christian High), the No. 1 prospect in the national Class of 2020, averaged 13.0 points (hitting 12 of 18 from the floor), 7.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 3.0 blocked shots per game while 6-3 guard Jarod Lucas (Los Altos High) averaged 15.0 points Sunday – including 20 in the semifinal for the Magic.
In the silver bracket finale, the Orange County-based Cali Rebels topped the EBA Pharaohs (from Northern California), 68-48, as eight of the nine players who suited up for the winner scored at least six points.
Six-five Jonathan Scherer (Saddleback Valley Christian High) led the way with 15 points while 6-10 Dean Keener (Marina) had 10 points, eight rebounds and two blocked shots.
The third and final session of the July NCAA “evaluation” periods begins Wednesday at 5 p.m. and concludes 96 hours (on Sunday at 5 o’clock).
The vast majority of the “club” programs will be in Las Vegas in that stretch to participate in the multitude of events that will be run in and around the city.
