NEWPORT BEACH – The three-day Corona del Mar High Summer Varsity Boys Basketball Shootout tips off Friday afternoon.

Sixty-four games are set to be played in CDM’s two gyms and at the near-by Newport Coast Community Center (where seven games will be played on Saturday, beginning at 10:30 a.m.).

Among the programs scheduled to participate are Trinity League squads from Mater Dei, Santa Margarita, Orange Lutheran and Servite, as well as “non-Orange County” programs from Riverside Poly and Phoenix St. Mary’s.

Opening games on Friday (at 2 o’clock) have Capistrano Valley taking on Costa Mesa in the “big” gym and the host Sea Kings meeting Phoenix St. Mary’s in the “small” gym.

Santa Margarita returns two players, seniors-to-be Jake Kyman and Max Agbonkpolo, that participated in last week’s NBPA Top 100 Camp in Charlottesville, VA.

Kyman committed to UCLA in the spring (he’s scheduled to sign a National Letter of Intent in November) while Agbonkpolo is being recruited by the likes of USC, Arizona, Arizona State and Washington.

Riverside Poly has one of the better guards from the Class of 2020 in Lamont Butler (pictured).

Riverside Poly will take on Santa Margarita (4:10 p.m.) and Mater Dei (6:30) Sunday in CDM’s larger facility.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
