NORWALK, Ca. – The events surrounding the weekend’s 16th Pangos All-American Camp demonstrated – once again – why the event rates as absolute must-attend for any high school hooper given the opportunity to do so.
*The talent in attendance at Cerritos College figuratively spoke to the exceptional level of itself during each of the 27 games (including three all-star tilts on Sunday) that were played over the gymnasium’s three-court configuration.
The camp annually turns out a dozen or so McDonald’s All-Americans. And, with five members of the McDonald’s selection committee on hand over the weekend, there should be just as many – if not more – selected for the 2019 squad next January;
*Each major – and minor, for that matter – Internet “media site” that specializes in evaluating and publicizing hoopers was represented at the camp, translating into maximum social media presence by the camp over the weekend;
*And, for the first time ever, the NBA granted permission to its 30 franchises to send representatives to evaluate players at the camp. And all but eight of those took advantage, giving its their scouting personnel the ability to – in most cases – get initial up-close-and-personnel looks at those players.
Camp founder and director Dinos Trigonis tabbed Isaiah Mobley (6-9/Temecula, CA/Rancho Christian/Class of 2019) and Scottie Barnes (6-8/West Palm Beach, FL/University School/2019) as the Most Outstanding Players from the respective blue and white squads for the Top 30 Cream of the Camp All-Star Game, with three-time camp standout Charles Bassey (6-9/Louisville Aspire Academy/2019) as the overall Most Outstanding Player of the camp for the second year in a row.
But my choice – quite the tough one, by the way – as consistently the most impressive player over the weekend is Mobley’s younger brother, 6-foot-11 Evan Mobley, who could end up as the consensus No. 1 prospect in the national Class of 2020 by August.
Here are 20 players who most impressed me over the weekend, broken down nationally and regionally. These are not necessarily the guys I think are the 20-best prospects that were on hand; just the guys who “played the best” when I watched.
