ORANGE, Ca. – Do you have a spare couple of hours at your disposal Saturday and would like to seem some of the very best high school basketball players from anywhere?
Then I’d suggest rolling over to Orange Lutheran High.
That’s the headquarters for the Magic Memorial Festival, presented by adidas.
The event, which tipped off Friday night and is hosted by Etop Udo-Ema and his capable Compton Magic Crew, includes multiple divisions of (mostly) adidas-fronted club programs competing for championships that will be decided on Monday.
For the top (Battle Zone) teams, there are also eight-team “Battle Cup” mini-tournaments, in 17s and 16s divisions, that tipped Friday night.
Playing in the 17s semifinals are the Compton Magic and Pump-N-Run (11:15 a.m.), followed by Dream Vision and Team Avery Bradley (12:20 p.m.). The title game is set for 4:40 p.m., before the eight teams join the other pool-play participants in another, larger tournament.
A hunk of SoCal’s finest players will be on display in both semifinals, with the Compton Magic paced by Rancho Christian’s Mobley Brothers (Isaiah and Evan), as well as Jarod Lucas (Hacienda Heights Los Altos), Jaylen Clark (Corona Centennial) and Johnny Juzang (Harvard-Westlake).
Another Compton Magic standout, Chino Hills’ Onyeka Okongwu, hasn’t played this spring because of a tender Achilles Tendon.
Among the PNR players are the Santa Margarita duo of Max Agbonkpolo and Shengze Li, as well as Ethan Anderson (Fairfax), Kyle Owens (Crespi), Julien Franklin (Villa Park) and Giordan Williams (Long Beach Poly).
Another Santa Margarita player, UCLA-bound Jake Kyman, plays for Dream Vision, as does Jonathan Salazar (from St. John Bosco/PICTURED) and Sedrick Altman (Colony).
Team Avery Bradley is made up of some of the better players from Washington, notably P.J. Fuller and Jamon Kemp of Seattle Garfield.
