LAGUNA NIGUEL, Ca. –  The top four teams in the updated BurlisonOnBasketball SoCal Top 10 Plus 15 will be in the same building Saturday evening.

Unbeaten and top-ranked will face No. 3 Sierra Canyon while No. 2 Etiwanda hooks up with No. 4 Mater Dei at Cal Baptist University in Riverside during the CIF Southern Section’s Open Division championship semifinals.

And, roughly 60 miles to the northwest of CBU, the L.A. City will be holding its Open championship semifinals when No. 6 Westchester faces Granada Hills (an upset winner at Narbonne Saturday night) and No.’s 11 and 17 – Fairfax and Taft – play in the other contest.

The San Diego Section gets into the playoff mix on Friday, with its Open Division pitting St. Augustine at No. 10 Foothills Christian; Vista at No. 18 Mission Bay; La Jolla Country Day at No. 20 Torrey Pines; and Chula Vista Mater Dei Catholic at San Marcos.

Foothills Christian is led by Arizona State-bound Taeshon Cherry (PICTURED), who was a three-year starter at St. Augustine and helped lead the Saints to last year’s SD Open title and a regional upset win at Sierra Canyon.

In notable non-Open Division Southern Section quarterfinals scheduled for Tuesday evening, No. 15 Pasadena visits No. 14 Damien; No. 13 Chino Hills is at No. 21 Centennial; No. 19 Long Beach Poly travels to No. 9 Oak Park; and No. 24 Roosevelt plays host to No. 25 Rancho Verde.

All but Chino Hills were part of the Classic at Damien tournament after Christmas.

Each of the Southern Section winners Tuesday will not only advance to Friday night semifinal games but are also guaranteed spots in the State Regional playoffs which get underway on March 7.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
