Many of the top high school basketball programs along the west coast will be involved in “one-day events” on Monday in honor of Martin Luther King Day.

Among those are the “MLK Classic”, just outside of Las Vegas at Henderson’s Coronado High.

The six-game event culminates in the 8 p.m. clash between Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth, CA) and Las Vegas Bishop Gorman. Both squads are jammed with high-quality underclassmen, including Cassius Stanley (Sierra Canyon), along with a terrific senior in University of Washington-bound Tyler Bey (Bishop Gorman).

At the OLU Hoopfest, presented by adidas and held at Orange Lutheran in Southern California, games get underway at 10 a.m. with Lynwood (and 6-9 junior Carl Lewis) facing off against El Cajon Foothills Christian (and 6-8 senior Taeshon Cherry).

Perhaps the keynote matchup there is the 5:30 clash between Corona Centennial (and its terrific trio of sophomore starters) and the Mobley Brothers (Isaiah and Evan)-led Temecula Rancho Christian.

Up the coast at Saint Mary’s College in Moraga, the Maxpreps MLK Classic is a six-team affair highlighted by the 6:45 clash between two of NorCal’s best, Modesto Christian and Richmond Salesian.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
