Bernard, Cockburn among Saturday Pangos standouts

NORWALK, Ca. – A couple of players from the respective East and West coasts had a pair of strong efforts each during Saturday’s second day of the 15th Pangos All-American Camp at Cerritos College.

Representing the East quite nicely, thank you very much, was Class of 2019 big man – very big man – Kofi Cockburn of Middle Village (NY) Christ the King.

Cockburn goes at least 6-foot-10 and looks all of, say, 270 or so well-sculpted pounds.

And he put good use to all of that ample size, strength, surprisingly nimble footwork and assertiveness while helping “USC’ split its games with UCLA (losing 70-62) and Cal (prevailing, 64-52).

While matching up (for at least portions of each game) against 7-foot-2 Bol Bol (Santa Ana, CA, Mater Dei) and 7-foot (or not very short of it) Bryan Penn-Johnson (Las Vegas Coronado), was credited with hitting a combined 14 of 20 shots from the field with a collective 32 points and 15 rebounds.

And the biggest (figuratively) reason the “Trojans” couldn’t knock off their rival “Bruins” was another New Yorker player in fellow Class of 2019 member Cole Anthony (NYC Archbishop Molloy, a guard who dropped 27 points on Cockburn and his teammates.

One of the handful of standouts from the Southern California-based Compton Magic program sizzled with both his jumper and ability to slash to the iron Saturday.

Six-six Jules Bernard (Los Angeles Windward), who didn’t play Friday night while resting an ankle that was turned in Monday’s Magic Memorial 17 Battle Zone Division semifinal at Orange Lutheran High.

But Bernard hit the Cerritos College floor running – and scoring – Saturday, scoring 15 points for “Virginia” in its loss to “North Carolina” and then 31 (with eight 3s) in his team’s win over “Duke”.

“Miami” and “Arizona” each won both of its games Saturday to improve to 3-0.

One of the best point guards in the event, 6-2 Logan Johnson (Mountain View, CA, St. Francis), turned in two more solid efforts for Miami on Saturday, hitting the game-winning layup in an overtime win over Duke and averaging 11.5 points on the day after the 21-point win over Louisville in the evening.

One of his Miami teammates, 6-9 Reggie Perry (Thomasville, GA), continued to look like one of the very best power forwards in the Class of 2018 his 23-point, 10-rebound effort against Louisville.

Arizona is led by a couple of juniors, 6-10 Charles Bassey (San Antonio St. Anthony) and 6-3 Jarod Lucas (Hacienda Heights, CA, Los Altos).

Bassey averaged 15.5 points and eight rebounds Saturday while Lucas bounced back from a 1-of-8 effort from behind the arc Saturday afternoon in the win over “Stanford” who dropped in 5-of-7 3s en route to 25 points in the 84-81 win over Oregon.

Camp games resume Sunday morning at 9:30, with two all-star games being played at 12:45 (Top 50) and 2:15 (Top 25).

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
