REDONDO BEACH, Ca. – Championship quarterfinals pitting teams ranked in Southern California’s BurlisonOnBasketball Top 25 are on tap Tuesday in the second day of the 65th Dijon Thompson Pacific Shores Tournament.

Westchester at 5; No. 19 Redondo and Harbor City Narbonne (among the “Next 10” in the first set of ratings) at 6:30 and No. 10 Santa Margarita and No. 11 Lake Balboa Birmingham.

In consolation quarterfinals scheduled for Tuesday in the Redondo Union auxiliary gymnasium, Lakewood Mayfair takes on Lynwood at 3, followed by Compton Dominguez vs. Inglewood (4:30), Studio City Harvard-Westlake and Cerritos Gahr (6) and Palos Verdes Peninsula and Temecula Rancho Christian (7:30).

Top seed Santa Margarita (75-44 over Peninsula), Birmingham (73-54 over Rancho Christian), Narbonne (66-53 over Harvard-Westlake), Poly (69-57 over Mayfair), Westchester (66-50 over Lynwood), Oak Park (63-51 over Dominguez) and Roosevelt (65-53 over Inglewood) each won by double-figure margins while Redondo had to hold off a late rally by Gahr to prevail, 66-59, on Monday.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
