REDONDO BEACH, Ca. – Many of the better teams in Southern California will be on display Saturday during the third Take Flight Challenge, hosted by Redondo Union High.
Eight games are scheduled, split into “morning/afternoon” and “evening” sessions, with separate admission charged for each.
Three teams that won tournaments earlier in the week, Santa Monica (National Division of the MaxPreps Holiday Classic at Rancho Mirage High), Eastvale Roosevelt (American Division of the Under Armour Holiday Classic at Torrey Pines) and Bishop Montgomery (D-I Challenge at L.A. Cathedral), are among the 16 squads in action Saturday.
Bishop Montgomery (13-0 after its third tourney championship) faces Corona Centennial (10-3 after its loss to L.A. Fairfax in the Open Division title game at Torrey Pines Wednesday night) in what might be the most compelling of the evening games.
The Knights and Huskies figures to be a part of the CIF Southern Section’s Open Division playoff field – as high seeds – for the third year in a row.
The host Seahawks, also expected to go three-for-three in CIF SS Open participation, face Santa Margarita – another strong candidate for the 16-team Open field in February – at 7 o’clock.
Eight players who signed letters of intent with NCAA Division I programs in November are expected to participate: Guards Jacob Davison (Cantwell/Eastern Washington), Milan Acquaah (Cathedral/Washington State), Jonah Mathews (Santa Monica/USC) and Jordan Griffin (Centennial/Long Beach State) and front-court players Henry Welsh (Loyola/Harvard), Javontie Jackson (Compton/Long Beach State), Raysean Scott (Compton/Florida-Gulf Coast) and Trevor Stanback (Maranatha/Stanford).
Two other players who signed in November, Drew Buggs (Poly/Hawaii) and Ike Anigbogu (Centennial/UCLA), are not expected to play for injury and family reasons, respectively.
Some of the better “unsigned” seniors scheduled to play Saturday include guards Leland Green and Morgan Means of Redondo (each was an all-MaxPreps Tournament selection); Shacquille Dawkins of Alemany (also all-tourney at MaxPreps) and forward Lucas Siewert (Cathedral).
