LOS ANGELES – Three CIF Southern Section champions and the L.A. City champion – the host program – highlight the 16-team field for the Fairfax High Fall Basketball Classic Saturday.
Among the spotlight contests are Mater Dei vs. Loyola (11 a.m.); the host Lions vs. Crespi (2 p.m.); Redondo vs. Chino Hills (6:30) and, to cap the day’s activities, Santa Monica vs. Sierra Canyon at 8.
Chino Hills and Sierra Canyon will likely be the consensus choice as the two strongest Southern Section teams going into the regular season.
Chino Hills is led by the state’s – and the west’s – best player in 6-foot-5 Lonzo Ball, who is expected to sign a national letter of intent with UCLA next month.
Fairfax is expected to battle rival Westchester – and, perhaps, Taft – for the top spot in the L.A. City.
Schedule: 9:30 a.m., El Segundo vs. Torrance; 11, Mater Dei vs. Loyola; 12:30 p.m., Pasadena Maranatha vs. Long Beach Poly; 2, Fairfax vs. Encino Crespi; 3:30, L.A. Windward vs. Mission Hills Alemany; 5, La Canada vs. L.A. Brentwood; 6:30, Redondo Beach Redondo Union vs. Chino Hills; 8, Santa Monica vs. Chatsworth Sierra Canyon.
