CARLSBAD, Ca. – The first-ever “Crème of the County – featuring many of the best basketball prospects in San Diego County, and beyond – is scheduled to tip off Saturday morning at 10 o’clock in the Duffield Sports Center on the Army-Navy Academy campus.

Eight games of approximately one hour each – beginning with the Class of 2020 (current eighth graders) contest at 10 a.m.

Things are set to wrap up with the 2016 (current high school seniors) game at 5 p.m.

According to event co-organizer Aaron Burgin (@FullTimeHoops1), each roster has been filled and there is no “walk-up” availability for players of any grade level.

Admission – good for all eight games – is $5.

The campus is located at 2605 Carlsbad Avenue in Carlsbad.

Among the better players from the Class of 2016 scheduled to participate are Justin Davis (San Diego Morse), Keegan Cummins and Marcus Hentley (San Diego Section Division I champion Escondido) as well as 6-foot-10 Jacob Tryon (from Southern Section I-AA runner-up Great Oak in Temecula).

The Class of 2017 “Crème Game” is expected to include forward Richard Polanco and guard Ed Fenzi, from the host school; forwards Matt Mitchell (Eastvale Roosevelt), Robby Robinson (San Diego Kearny) and Ajani Kennedy (Moreno Valley Rancho Verde); and guards J.J. Overton (San Diego Rancho Bernardo) and Michael Diaz (Escondido Orange Glen).

An extremely strong San Diego Class of 2018 will be represented in the 1 p.m. Crème Game by, among others, forwards Miles Norris (Chula Vista), Taeshon Cherry (San Diego St. Augustine) and Warren Washington (Escondido), as well as point guard Taurus Samuels (Vista).

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
