GARDEN GROVE, CA – The first day of the 12th SoCal Hoop Review showcased some top prospects across each high school class.
Four nifty Open Division matchups Friday night in the Next Level Sports Complex were held on Court 3, beginning with the L.A. Fastbreak Blue taking on the Salt Lake City Rebels.
The team from Southern California eventually pulled away for the victory before the overall play of K.J. Feagin (Long Beach Poly) who, along with Lindsey Drew (L.A. Fairfax) is one of the two best unsigned point guards in the West.
Also playing well for Lionel Benjamin’s Fastbreak Blue squad were 6-3 junior Dwight Ramos (Walnut) as well as 6-2 Akil Reese (who missed all but the final three games of his senior season with Westchester while recovering from a torn ACL last summer).
The SLC Rebels were led by a couple of underclassmen from Sand Creek High in Colorado Springs, CO in 6-6 D’Shawn Schwarz (a left-handed sophomore with a lot of skill as a handler and shooter) and 6-6 Jordan Phillips (a springy junior).
In the next game, on the same court, Marshawn Cherry’s San Diego All-Stars Elite rolled past the Arizona Warriors behind the play of junior point guard Justin Moore (Mission Bay) and a quality guard from the Class of 2015 in Torin Webb (who helped lead Great Oak of Temecula to the CIF Southern Section IAA championship game).
The Arizona Warriors had some tall players with some intriguing skills, most notably 6-9 junior Wyatt Lowell (Gilbert Williams Field) and 6-8 freshman K.J. Hymes (Phoenix St. Mary’s).
In the third matchup on Court 3 the Utah Basketball Elite squad overcame the sharp jump shooting of left handers Michael Alvarez (a senior guard at Oak Park in Southern California) and Grant Arthur (a junior at La Canada) to toppled Earl Watson Elite Black.
Junior guards Dace Spotted Elk (Salt Lake City East), Spencer Johnson (American Fork) and Preston Sanchez (South Jordan Copper Hills) were exception for UBE.
And, in the finale, the Southern California All-Stars/Elite Red pulled away down the stretch to knock off Next Level Premier of Colorado.
The winners are led by a terrific “inside-outside” combination from Santa Monica High in freshman point guard Spencer Freedman and junior center Jayce Johnson.
Coach Bob Becker also got impressive performances from junior guard Austen Awosika (Chino Hills Ayala) and senior forward Clifton Powell (Sun Valley Village Christian).
The event runs through Sunday afternoon.
