Nike Extravaganza homecoming for Oak Hill’s Phillips

SANTA ANA, Ca. – Based upon some of the matchups on hand, the 20^th version of the Nike Extravaganza, hosted by Mater Dei High, could rival some of the best of the first 19.

Four games (including a girls’ clash) will be played on Friday, with Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson) – currently top-ranked nationally – taking on one of the best teams in California in Chatsworth Sierra Canyon at 7 o’clock.

Among the Oak Hill Academy standouts are McDonald’s All-American Dwayne Bacon (who signed with Florida State in November) and point guard Terrence Phillips, who committed to the University of Missouri recently and is the brother of Detroit Pistons’ standout Brandon Jennings.

Phillips grew up in Southern California (largely in Orange County) and counts Mater Dei standout Rex Pflueger as one of his closest friends.

Nine games will be played on Saturday, three in the morning session and six in an evening session (there are separate admissions).

Among the terrific matchups Saturday: Chino Hills (led by Ball brothers Lonzo and Li’Angelo) against L.A. Westchester at 4:15; Las Vegas Bishop Gorman (led by McDonald’s All-Americans in Chase Jeter and Stephen Zimmerman) vs. Etiwanda at 5:45; and Oakland Bishop O’Dowd (led by McDonald’s All-American Ivan Rabb) vs. Oak Hill at 7:15.

The event wraps up with unbeaten L.A. Fairfax taking on Mater Dei (20-3 prior to its Friday game vs. Colony) at 9 o’clock.

SATURDAY: (morning session) 8:30, Servite vs. St. Margaret’s; 10, Los Alamitos vs. Villa Park; 11:30, Anaheim Canyon vs. JSerra. (evening session) 1:15, Orange Lutheran vs. Sonora; 2:45, Corona Centennial vs. St. John Bosco; 4:15, Chino Hills vs. L.A. Westchester; 5:45, L.V. Bishop Gorman vs. Etiwanda; 7:15, Oakland Bishop O’Dowd vs. Oak Hill Academy; 9, L.A. Fairfax vs. Mater Dei.

Tickets: Friday session — $12 all general admission; Saturday morning session — $12 all general admission; Saturday evening session — $22 reserved and $12 general admission. Tickets can only be purchased at Mater Dei.
