LOS ANGELES – Day II of the second annual Take Flight Challenge, presented by Redondo Union High School, tips off at 11:30 Saturday morning in The Jordan Hangar.
Six high school games are set to be played, with things schedule to be concluded with a 9 o’clock clash between prep school teams from Canada (Orangeville Prep) and San Diego (Balboa Prep).
The respective prep school squads are led by 7-foot junior Thon Maker and 6-10 sophomore DeAndre Ayton, respectively.
Maker didn’t play in his team’s game with Carson’s Future Prep Friday night.
If Maker plays Saturday night he and Ayton would have their first-ever matchup. They are considered the top “big” prospects in their respective classes.
Lawndale, which has a terrific pair of posts in Chimezie Metu (a USC signee) and Buddha Jones (San Diego State), faces Compton in the first of the high school games at 11:30 a.m.
Tickets can be purchased only available at The Jordan Hangar.
Adults’ admission is $12 per session or $20 for two sessions (all-day Saturday).
The admission charged for children and senior citizens, respectively, is $8 (per session) and $14 (all day Saturday).
The Jordan Hangar is located at 12499 West Bluff Creek Drive.
Because of construction, driving entrance to the facility is difficult if you approach from the extreme from the far south (Sepulveda to Lincoln, via the West-bound 105 exit). It is a lot easier getting there via the 405 and Jefferson off-ramp.
In the two high school games Friday night, L.A. Brentwood overcame a seven-point deficit going into the final quarter to knock off Anaheim Canyon, 65-55, behind game MVP Maxwell Kupchak’s 20 points.
In the second, North Hollywood Campbell Hall eased its way past Lakewood Mayfair, 76-42, as UCLA-bound and game MVP Aaron Holiday scored 22 points despite fouling out with 4:25 to go.
In the prep school contest, Future Prep pulled away after intermission for a 62-44 win against Orangeville Prep.
And, finally, New Williams of Santa Monica High won the dunking competition that was held Friday night.
Saturday’s schedule:
Morning/early afternoon: 11:30 a.m., Lawndale vs. Compton; 1 p.m., Santa Monica vs. Sun Valley Village Christian; and, 2:30, Corona Centennial vs. L.A. Westchester.
Evening: 4, Chino Hills vs. Mission Hills Alemany; 6, L.A. Loyola vs. Montebello Cantwell Sacred-Heart; 7:30, Redondo Beach Redondo vs. Torrance Bishop Montgomery; and, 9, Ontario (CAN) Orangeville Prep vs. San Diego Balboa Prep.
