LAGUNA NIGUEL, Ca. – There are three solid options on Saturday for those seeking to spend the better part of a day in a gymnasium watching some of the best hoops that Southern California has to offer us.
First and foremost among those events is the James Samson/State Preview, hosted by L.A. Fairfax High.
Nine games are scheduled, beginning at 8 a.m. – that’s correct; 8 in the A.M.; you may want to bring an intravenous line, hooked to a large thermos of coffee, to mainline the caffeine – with L.A. Brentwood tipping off against Woodland Hills Taft.
There is likely to be nary an open seat in the building by the time once-beaten Chatsworth Sierra Canyon, top-ranked in the CIF Southern Section, takes on the host and unbeaten Lions, No. 1 in the L.A. City, at 7 o’clock.
And I seriously if many will be giving up those seats for the event’s 8:30 finale of Pasadena Maranatha (led by should-have-been 2015 McDonald’s All-American Tyler Dorsey, the top scorer in California) against Chino Hills (led by the No. 1 junior in California in 6-foot-5 point guard Lonzo Ball and his sophomore brother, L’Angelo Ball).
The Greatest Showcase on Earth is highlighted by its 8:30 p.m. between Chicago Morgan Park (led by senior guard Marcus LoVett, who played three seasons at two Southern California high schools) and host Cathedral and its stable of future college players in its junior class.
There nine games (beginning at 9 a.m.) at the 13th Southern California Shootout, again held on the campus of Azusa Pacific University
The most compelling of those could prove to be the 7:30 contest pitting CIF Southern Section Open Division candidates Cantwell Sacred-Heart and Damien.
