LONG BEACH, Ca. – A couple of “upsets” on Saturday set the stage for Sunday’s competition during the first Ron Massey Memorial Fall Hoops Classic at Jordan High.
The No.’s 1 and 2 seeds, Las Vegas Bishop Gorman and Long Beach Poly, were stunned by Compton (77-64) and Montbello Cantwell-Sacred Heart (46-43), respectively, in the first round of the event Saturday evening.
In the other quarterfinals of the eight-team tournament, Chino Hills – with Ball Brothers Lonzo (a 6-5 junior, with 25 points) and LiAngelo (a 6-4 sophomore, with 30) combining for 55 points – out-sprinted L.A. Cathedral, 104-96; and Pasadena Maranatha, with transfers Tyler Dorsey (by way of Bellflower St. John Bosco, with 35) and Trevor Stanback (Mission Hills Chaminade, with 18) tallying 53 points, rolled past host Jordan, 80-61.
In Sunday’s action, Gorman faces Cathedral (9 a.m.) and Jordan takes on Poly (10:10) in consolation semifinals, while Chino Hills and Compton (11:20) and Maranatha and Cantwell-Sacred Heart (12:30 p.m.) play in the championship semifinals.
The final four games are set to tip at 1:40 (seventh place), 2:50 (fifth), 4 o’clock (third) and 5:10 (championship).
Senior Robert Lewis, a 6-foot-4 left hander who was hobbled a lot of June and July with a sore knee, led Compton with 24 points while 6-5 juniors Raysean Scott (18) and Javonntie Jackson (17) combined for 35 more.
Chase Jeter, who committed to Duke on the first Monday night in August, led Gorman with 16 points.
Gorman was without another of the country’s best big men, Stephen Zimmerman, who remained in Las Vegas with his family as they continued to play host to some of the most high-profile head coaches in the country as part of his recruiting process.
And, in Saturday’s finale and most competitive of the four games, senior Antonio Cortez hit a 3 in the second overtime – this one played in a “sudden-win” format – to give Cantwell-Sacred Heart the victory over Poly, which returns several key plays from the squad that one the CIF Southern Section’s I-AA championship last March.
Six of the teams in this field – all but Gorman (obviously) and Jordan – could end up being a part of the Southern Section’s 16-team Open (top) top playoff division this spring.
Admission for today’s games is $10. Jordan is located at 6500 Atlantic, close to the intersection of the 710 and 91 freeways.
