Ball Brothers too sizzling for Massey Memorial field

LONG BEACH, Ca. – It was the kind of three-game performance that would have made the coach the event was named in honor of proud.

The Chino Hills High transition offense pretty overwhelmed the Huskies’ opposition during the first Ron Massey Memorial Fall Classic at Jordan High, as the Lonzo Ball-led club wrapped things up Sunday evening with a 90-66 championship game victory over Pasadena Maranatha.

The 6-foot-5 Ball had 13 points, seven rebounds, seven assists, two steals and two blocked shots in a first half that ended with his team up by 18 points (53-35).

Led by Bellflower St. John Bosco transfer Tyler Dorsey (who scored 26 points and averaged 27.3 over the teams’ three games), the Minutemen got to within 10 points of the Huskies with about 12 minutes to go in the second half.

But Ball and his sophomore brother, Li’Angelo Ball, just as quickly turned the momentum in their favor again and quickly padded the advantage back into the 20-point range.

Lonzo Ball finished with 19 points, 15 rebounds and 15 assists while his brother scored 35, with 21 of those coming via seven shots from behind the arc – most of those from way beyond the 3-point stripe.

The Balls’ first cousin, freshman Andre Ball, even got into the act with a 3-pointer and a dunk in the second half.

Coupled with their Saturday night victory over L.A. Cathedral and semifinal victory against Compton early Sunday afternoon, the Huskies averaged 92.7 points.

Compton, after losing to Chino Hills (84-77), came back four hours later to knock off Montebello Cantwell-Sacred Heart for third place, 52-30, as juniors Raysean Scott (19) and Javonntie Jackson (12) combined for 31 points.

The teams that were seeded 1-2 in the eight-team event, Las Vegas Bishop Gorman and Long Beach Poly, were upset Friday night and ended up playing in the fifth-place game Sunday afternoon.

And Gorman, led by two of the best post players on the prep level, Stephen Zimmerman and Chase Jeter, held off the Jackrabbits in a thriller, 51-49.

Senior guard K.J. Feagin might have won the game for Poly but his 3-point attempt was blocked, and controlled, by Zimmerman with five seconds remaining and he held onto the ball as time expired.

Zimmerman, who wasn’t in Long Beach Saturday when his team lost – he was home with his family in Las Vegas entertaining University of Kentucky head coach John Calipari and assistant Kenny Payne on a recruiting visit – was mostly dominant, at both ends of the floor, against the Jackrabbits with 13 points, 14 rebounds, four blocked shots and four assists.

Jeter, who averaged 16.7 points over three games, committed to Duke early last month while in Long Beach playing in the adidas Nations.

Cathedral toppled the host team in the seventh-place game, 79-54, despite the 32-point performance of the Panthers’ 5-8 senior Seth Guillory, who scored 21 points in the consolation semifinal loss to Moore League opponent Poly Sunday morning and 27 in the first-round loss to Maranatha Friday night.
