INGLEWOOD, Ca. – The ninth-grade game was anything but competitive.
But, although the team wearing the white jerseys prevailed over its black-shirted opponents, 135-78, in the final game of the event, Saturday’s Pangos Julius V Showcase at Inglewood High proved an ideal vehicle to take a look at some of the best of the very young basketball players in Southern California – and, in one case, beyond.
Julius von Hanzlik did another fine job of assembling some of the best elementary and middle school players in the Southland. His events are becoming “must-attend” for pre-high school athletes who want to compete against other future high school – and college – standouts.
And a lot of the guys in that ninth-grade game will make significant impacts on their high school squads as 2014-15 freshmen.
Several programs appear on track to have a couple of ninth graders playing key roles in the coming season.
*Post Riley Battin (for whom the “pick-and-pop” game seemingly was created for) and guard Wes Slajchert – who played for the “White” squad Saturday – could help Oak Park win another CIF Southern Section title in March.
*Point guard Spencer Freedman (who was pretty much un-guardable most of the way for the White) and wing Cameron Boyd (who played for the Black) are going to be terrific first-year players for Coach Jim Hecht at Santa Monica.
*Six-foot-three Devon Garcia (he played for the White) and 6-2 Wayne Arnold (a member of the Black squad) should be instant contributors – and maybe even standouts – for first-year coach Jonathan Davis at Compton Dominguez.
*Encino Crespi Coach Russell White has produced some very good guards – most notably London Perrantes, who started for ACC champion Virginia as a freshman last season – and he’s got another of those in Brandon Williams (another standout for the White team on Saturday).
*Joseph Bush, at about 6-5 and 205 or so pounds, could be an instant starter at Villa Park, which lost a lot of inside strength from its CIF Southern Section IA runner-up squad last March.
*Guards Jamal Hartwell (L.A. Fairfax), Caleb Christopher (Redondo Beach Redondo Union), Elijah McCullough (La Verne Damien) and David Atencio (Huntington Beach Edison), along with forward Fletcher Tynen (Torrance Bishop Montgomery) and Jules Bernard (L.A. Windward), each had strong moments on Saturday afternoon.
They may not have quite the immediate impact upon their teams this season as the aforementioned guys, though, because they are each a part of a program with a lot of veteran talent.
