LOS ANGELES – Day V of the 28th Nike Fairfax Summer Basketball Classic will culminate in the championship semifinals on Friday evening.
Chino Hills, led by Class of 2016 standout Lonzo Ball (who has scored 45 and 43 points, respectively, in his team’s first two wins over Harvard-Westlake and Lawndale), takes on Chatsworth Sierra Canyon in the first semifinal at 6 o’clock.
Coach Ty Nichols has a roster littered with gifted prospects in the Classes of 2016 (point guard Devearl Ramsey), ’17 (posts Cody Riley and Ira Lee, and wings Adam Seiko and Terence McBride) and even ’18 (wings Michael Feinberg and Cassius Stanley).
Sierra Canyon knocked of Orange Lutheran (which will likely be the second best squad in the Trinity League, after Santa Ana Mater Dei, and is a strong candidate to be in the “Open Division” of the Southern Section playoffs next spring) Wednesday night in a very competitive contest.
Mission Hills Alemany will face Corona Centennial in the second semi at about 7:30 or so.
Alemany, spared by 2016 standouts in 6-foot-8 Daron Henson and speedy point guard Shacquille Dawkins, knocked off Mater Dei (which was playing without its two best players in wing Rex Pflueger and post Michael Cage Jr.) Thursday night, 71-59.
Centennial – even with standout point guard Sedrick Barefield has well less than 100 percent due to illness – rolled past the host Lions, 78-61, as junior guard Jordan Griffin led a balanced scoring attack with 21 points.
The championship game is set for Saturday evening at 6 o’clock.
