SANTA ANA, Ca. – The Mater Dei High basketball program will play host to an 81-game tournament this weekend – with games spread over three courts in the school’s Meruelo Center.
Among the program joining the Monarchs in the event (which gets underway with three games tipping off at 3:30 Friday afternoon and then wraps up with three more games at 8:45 Sunday night) Bellflower St. John Bosco, Corona Centennial, Redondo Beach Redondo, Santa Margarita, L.A. Fairfax, Chatsworth Sierra Canyon and Anaheim Canyon.
Six programs that participated in the first-ever CIF Southern Section Open Division playoffs – Mater Dei, St. John Bosco, Centennial, Redondo, Sierra Canyon and Montebello Sacred-Heart – are scheduled to play this weekend.
The Monarchs – for the first time in four years, without 2014 State Player of the Year and McDonald’s All-American Stanley Johnson on their roster – open play Friday at 3:30 against Cerritos Gahr on Court 2
Other noteworthy matchups Friday include Huntington Beach Edison vs. St. John Bosco (4:45, Court 3) and Redondo vs. Cantwell (6, Court 2).
Centennial – one of the teams likely to have the best chance of dethroning the Monarchs next spring – plays Mater Dei at 7:30 Saturday night on Court 2.
Mater Dei plays three more “Open” participants on Sunday: Sierra Canyon (1 o’clock, Court 2), Redondo (5, Court 2) and Cantwell (8:45, Court 1).
The Mater Dei campus is located at 1202 Edinger (on the corner of Bristol).
