PARKER, Co. – Day I of the West Coast Elite Scouts Saturday at Legend High looked a lot like the opening day of the All-Colorado Camp held by event director Ryan Silver of the Earl Watson Elite program back in early November.
And that’s a good thing.
That session featured a lot of the best basketball players that Colorado has to offer in the current eighth-, seventh-, sixth- and even fifth-grade classes.
And that was case again Saturday when many of those same athletes showed up Saturday morning.
They were joined, too, by some other gifted players who made solid impressions.
Some of those who came back “bigger” and “better” Saturday from the high school class of 2018 – kids who will freshmen at their respective schools in the fall – included posts Barrett Keith (Cheyenne Mountain Junior High in Colorado Springs) and Jaylen Harden (Ken Caryl Middle School in Columbine).
Keith appeared to have grown at least an inch since September – he said he now goes about 6-foot-7 – and the big redhead once again demonstrated why he has a chance to be a dominant force before too deep into his high school career.
The 6-5 and left-handed Harden (6-4ish) showed off a lot of skill on the perimeter as well as in the post.
Also growing – in both size and polish – was 6-4 Sam Masten (another left-hander) of Rocky Heights Middle School in Littleton, who was even more forceful in and around the lane and seemed to have more perimeter skill, as a shooter and passer, than I saw in him in November.
Also elevating their November performances were a pair of 6-4 eighth graders, Zach Hidalgo (Frontier Academy in Greeley) and Will Becker (Laredo Middle School in Aurora).
Hidalgo may have been the most multi-skilled “big” eighth grader on display Saturday while Becker – who rammed home a dunk in the Top 20 All-Star Game – may have been the day’s most relentless rebounder.
Two other “newcomers” (at least I didn’t remember them from November and I had left those notes and rosters at home) who impressed me mightily up front were 6-3 Tyler Bruns (Cimarron Middle School, located not far from Legend High) and 6-5 Brendan LaRose (College Pathways Falcon Middle School in Colorado Springs.
Bruns’ low-post footwork and ability to get the ball up on the glass before defenders could react stood out immediately, as did LaRose’s ability to score equally well either hand (he’s right-handed but tossed in at least one left-handed semi-jump hook) in the lane.
Six-four Rayhan Ongala (Mracheck Middle School in Aurora), who came with his family from The Congo a couple of years ago, seems well on to his way to being 6-8 or taller by the time he graduates from high school.
His feel and skills are behind some of the other posts in the camp but he seemed more confident throughout the day.
Six-one Deven Nelson (Fountain Middle School in Fountain) was as good a shooting guard prospect as there was among the eighth graders in November and that was the case again on Saturday.
I saw a lot of Orlando Magic standout Arron Afflalo when he was a middle school standout in Southern California and there are a lot of similarities at the same stage of their respective development.
I almost wanted to shout to him “Nice move, Arron!” a few times Saturday.
Another eighth grader who should be quite the effective shooting guard or “wing”, if you will, before long in high school is Kaison Hammonds (Cherry Hills Christian School in Highlands Ranch).
Hammonds was my very unofficial choice for “MVP” in the Top 20 All-Star Game when the white jersey-team he played for defender its black jersey counterpart, 81-53.
Most of the eighth-grade standout point guards from November – including X Hatch-Jackson (Thunder Ridge Middle School in Aurora), Jon’il Fugett (the Denver School of Science and Technology) and Daylen Kountz (Florida Pitt-Waller K-8 in Denver) – were on hand Saturday and were quite good, again.
The left-handed Kountz sported the “throwback Afro” look in November; Saturday he was rocking the Bobby Brown fade.
Three other sophomore point guards who weren’t there in November – or, again, I just don’t remember them being there; again, dang I wish I had brought those rosters and notes with me back to Denver! – but were terrific Saturday were Elijah Martinez (St. Bernadette Middle School in Lakewood) , Daijon Smith (Prairie Middle School in Aurora) and Noah Lewis (Falcon Middle School in Colorado Springs).
One more eighth grader who played very well, from opening “camp game” to Top 20 All-Star contest was 6-2 left hander Kenneth Thrower (Thunder Ridge Middle School in Aurora).
I’m not sure I saw him miss a jump shot Saturday.
Stephen Hayes (Prairie Middle School in Aurora) and Jamil Safieddine (Graland Country Day School in Denver) impressed me more than any other seventh-grade point guards in November and that was the case on Saturday, as well, as both participated in the Top 20 All-Star Game.
Another seventh grader, Kenny Foster, was the MVP in the “Sixth/Seventh Grade All-Star Game” in November and showed off a variety of scoring skills again Saturday.
Two seventh graders who impressed as jump shooters in November — Levi Dombro (Liberty Middle School in Aurora) and Payton Egloff (Blessed Sacrament in Denver) – were still in that mode on Saturday.
The most impressive – by far – seventh-grade frontcourt player on Saturday was 6-2 Jaedon Bowles.
The 12-year-old Bowles (Prairie Middle School in Aurora) has grown five inches in the past year or so, and played quite well throughout Saturday despite the throb of the growing pains that manifested themselves in his knees.
The unofficial MVP – I didn’t collect ballots from anyone else – for the Top 40 All-Star Game Saturday was the shortest (maybe he goes about 5-0 right now but that estimate could be a tad generous) player in the game.
But Lian Ramiro (who is in the sixth grade at Horizon Middle School in Colorado Springs) hasn’t been shorted in the talent and competitive departments as he throughout that game while pacing the white jerseys to a 60-56 victory.
The camp wraps up on Sunday when high school players – ninth-, 10th– and 11th-graders – climb upon the figurative stage.
