LONG BEACH, Ca. – The Pangos Junior All-American Camp, held this past weekend at Cabrillo High, once more provided an insightful look into the future – both short- and long-term – of high school hoops in the west.
Southern California, the Bay Area (east and west), Sacramento and Washington were particularly well-represented, as were Utah and Arizona
Approximately 140 players – including a few as young as in the fourth and fifth grades – took part, with the festivities capped by Sunday all-star games on the sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade levels, as well as a “Best of the Best” game made up 21 eighth-graders and three seventh-graders.
Far and away the biggest – and most dominant – player at the event was 6-foot-8 Jordan Brown of Sacramento, who also played at the event a year ago when it was held at Redondo Union High in Redondo Beach.
There were stretches of games (each camp team played four times prior to the all-star competition) in which he seemingly did anything he wanted at either end of the floor – regardless of the size, strength or skill level of the opponent he was matched against.
Other eighth-grade posts that turned in strong performances included Riley Battin (Westlake Village, CA), JoJo Bush (Murrieta, CA), Elias King (Sacramento), Devonte Combs (Yakima, WA), Tae Lee (Corona, CA) and Andre Fields (Los Angeles).
Battin is the most offensively skilled of that bunch and Bush the physically strongest and most forceful.
The best of the “wing-types” (small forwards and “shooting” guards) among the sophomores included Michael Feinberg and Cassius Stanley (both already enrolled at Sierra Canyon in Chatsworth, CA), P.J. Fuller (Seattle), Wes Slajchert (Thousand Oaks, CA), Jaden Lee (Avondale, AZ), Scooter Smith (Cerritos, CA), Elijah Hardy (Oakland) and Max Davis (Piedmont, CA).
Feinberg, Slajchert, Smith, Hardy and Davis are each terrific jump shooters – the left-handed Hardy, in fact, hit four consecutive 3s late in the second half of the Best of the Best game.
Stanley was by far the most explosive jumper (vertical and horizontal) in the camp. Comparisons to Demar DeRozan (as eighth graders) have some merit. Fuller is not quite as vertically gifted as Stanley but is a better handler, passer and jump shooter right now.
The best of the eighth-grader point guards in the camp were Caleb Christopher (Lancaster, CA), Nassem Gaskin (Richmond, CA), Jamal Hartwell (Los Angeles), Pierre Cockrell (Seattle), Tre Smoots (Sacramento), John Clausell (Inglewood) and Kyree Brown (Berkeley).
The seventh graders in the Best of the Best game were point guards E.J. Jackson (Inglewood) and LaMelo Ball (Chino Hills), and shooting guard Makani Whiteside (Whittier, CA).
