REDONDO BEACH, Ca. – The first-ever, seven-game Take Flight Challenge, hosted by Redondo High, gets underway Saturday morning at 10 o’clock.
It figures to draw a large crowd of fans and college coaches alike, and could prove to be the most competitive and entertaining “one-day event” in the west this season.
Seven of the 14 teams in the field were ranked in the most recent Top 25 Southern California team ratings that I compile for the Long Beach edition of the Orange County register: L.A. Loyola (No. 2), Etiwanda (4), Compton (5), Redondo (6), Montebello Cantwell-Sacred Heart (9), Lakewood Mayfair (16) and Anaheim Canyon (22).
Those ratings were published before Monday’s final day of action in many elite tournaments across the southland.
Action tips off with the Anaheim Canyon vs. L.A. Brentwood clash at 10, with the featured game of the day – Compton vs. Loyola – set to commence at 8:30 p.m.
A half-dozen players in the event signed national letters of intent with NCAA Division I-affiliated programs in November: Tra Holder of Brentwood (with Arizona State), Jordan McLaughlin of Etiwanda (USC), Isaiah Bailey and Kyron Cartwright of Compton (Fresno State and Loyola Marymount, respectively) and Parker Jackson-Cartwright and Thomas Welsh of Loyola (Arizona and UCLA, respectively).
Admission, good for the entire slate of games, is $10 for adults and $8 for children 13 and younger.
