SAN DIEGO – It’s officially called the “National Division of the 24th Under Armour Holiday Classic.
After the first two days of play at Torrey Pines in the top division of the tournament, however, this change in name is suggested:
How about “the Southern California Division”?
Or, more specifically, maybe it should be referred to as “the Southern Section Division”.
Saturday night’s championship bracket semifinals are made up of four of the better teams from the Southern Section of the California Interscholastic Federation (the governing body of prep athletics in the state).
Unbeaten Los Angeles Loyola (76-61 over The Patrick School of Elizabeth, NJ), once-beaten Corona Centennial (71-53 over Westtown from Pennsylvania) and Chino Hills (64-44 over Wesleyan Christian of High Point, NC) disposed of supposed elite non-California teams in three of the Friday quarterfinals.
And, in the fourth, unbeaten Chatsworth Sierra Canyon – with a starting lineup made up of three freshmen, a sophomore and a junior – stunned Northern California’s best, team, Oakland Bishop O’Dowd, 70-65.
The victories set the stage for will be a preview of the sort of matchups that could be found in the Southern Section’s new “Open Division” playoffs could look like this spring.
Loyola (led by seniors in Parker Jackson-Cartwright, Thomas Welsh and Khalid Bedart-Ghani, and sizzling junior Max Hazzard) faces Sierra Canyon (which got terrific performances from freshman center Cody Riley and sophomore point guard Deveral Ramsey Friday night).
Then, at about 8:30, two teams led by underclass point guards who are among the very best in the country, Chino Hills (with sophomore Lonzo Ball) and Centennial (with junior Sed Barefield), duke it out for the right to play in Monday night’s championship game.
Saturday’s complete National Division schedule: (consolation) 9:30 a.m., Sacramento (CA) Sheldon vs. Seattle O’Dea; 11:05, Newark (CA) Memorial vs. San Diego St. Augustine; 12:40 p.m., San Diego Torrey Pines vs. Ludowici (GA) Faith Baptist; 2:15, Montebello (CA) Cantwell-Sacred Heart vs. Lakewood (CA) Mayfair; (fifth-place semifinals) 3:50, Oakland Bishop O’Dowd vs. Elizabeth (NJ) The Patrick School; 5:25, Westtown (PA) vs. High Point (NC) Wesleyan Christian; (championship semifinals) 7, L.A. Loyola vs. Chatsworth (CA) Sierra Canyon; 8:35, Chino Hills (CA) vs. Corona (CA) Centennial.
In games I watched in the American Division at Carlsbad La Costa Canyon Friday, Seattle Roosevelt (50-40 over Bakersfield of Central California), L.A. Windward (68-58 over L.A. Fairfax), La Costa Canyon (66-22 over Rocklin of Northern California) and Chula Vista (CA) Mater Dei (65-36 over Long Beach Millikan) cruised into Saturday’s semifinals.
As more testament to how strong the CIF’s Southern Section is this season, Windward, Cantwell-Sacred Heart and Mayfair are also SS schools.
Saturday’s complete American Division schedule: (consolation) 9:30, Cerritos (CA) Gahr vs. Phoenix Desert Vista; 11:05, Woodland Hills (CA) Taft vs. Union City (CA) James Logan; 12:40 p.m., Lake Washington vs. El Cajon (CA) Foothills Christian; 2:15, Temecula Valley (CA) vs. San Diego Hoover; (fifth-place semifinals) 3:50, Rocklin (CA) vs. L.A. Fairfax; 5:25, Long Beach Millikan vs. Bakersfield; (championship semifinals) 7, La Costa Canyon (CA) vs. L.A. Windward; 8:35, Seattle Roosevelt vs. Chula Vista (CA) Mater Dei.
