LAGUNA NIGUEL, Ca. – The 2013-14 college hoops season begins, in earnest, on Friday.
It’ll wrap up – we should hope just as earnestly, thank you very much – with the April 7 NCAA title game at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
There’s going to be a lot of games played on and between those dates.
And what follows is a list of the players I’ve projecting to make up the 50 best, across all classes, topped by first- and second-team All-America choices.
There are seven very good – obviously – freshmen on the list, each of which is capable of landing All-America honors come March.
But, as a nod to what they have already accomplished as college players, only college veterans were given consideration for the two preseason All-America teams you’re about to peruse.
Marcus Smart of Oklahoma State is as good a choice as any for the preseason Player of the Year.
Julius Randle of Kentucky is my preseason Top Freshman.
Watch for center Alec Brown of Wisconsin-Green Bay and guard Elfrid Payton of Louisiana-Lafayette to rate as a couple of the “surprise” players this season. That is “surprise” to most everyone who follows college hoops but people like me, who had a chance to watch Brown during the adidas Nations Garden Grove (CA) in early August and Payton during the USA Basketball Under 19 Trials in Colorado Springs in mid-June.
Here we go:
