REDONDO BEACH, Ca. – Six favorites advanced with relative ease, while two more teams had a rougher go of it before advancing to the championship quarterfinals of the 62nd Pacific Shores Tournament in the opening Monday night of the Southern California high school hoops season Monday night at Redondo Union High.
Top-seed St. John Bosco (84-35 over Palos Verdes, with a running clock in the fourth quarter), No. 2 Westchester (69-41 over Peninsula), host and three-seed Redondo (76-39 over Morningside) and four-seed Compton (74-66 over Narbonne) advanced to the Tuesday’s quarters by an average margin of victory of 30.5 points.
Five-seed Mayfair (74-30 over Rolling Hills Prep) and seven-seed Long Beach Poly (70-37 over Pacific Hills) also cruised.
But six-seed Campbell Hall (63-60 over Lawndale) and No. 8 Long Beach Millikan (71-69) had to go to the wire to earn quarterfinal slots.
In Tuesday’s championship quarters, Compton takes on Mayfair at 3:30 in the main gym, followed by defending L.A. City champion Westchester against Mayfair at 5, the top-seed Braves and their plethora of standouts vs. Millikan at 6:30 and the host Seahawks taking on Campbell Hall and Aaron Holiday – the youngest sibling in the Holiday Clan that includes the NBA’s Jrue Holiday – at 8.
Consolation quarters, played in the auxiliary gym, have Palos Verdes opening with Calabasas at 3, followed by Narbonne-Rolling Hills Prep (4:30), Morningside-Lawndale (6) and Peninsula-Pacific Hills (7:30).
Campbell Hall held a seven-point advantage with a bit more than a minute to go but had to overcome some poor decision-making and free-throwing shooting to hold off Lawndale, which was playing without 6-foot-9 junior Chimeze Metu (held out for undisclosed disciplinary reasons).
Millikan and Calabasas provided easily the most entertaining and hard-fought of the eight games played Monday.
Six-five senior Malik Marquetti of Millikan (who finished with 30 points and made a lot of terrific plays on the other end, as well) and Wyoming-bound point guard Jeremy Lieberman (20 points) provided a lot of the thrills.
With the scored tied at 69, Marquetti appeared to stumble with the ball in front of his bench with 1.8 seconds to go but Calabasas was called for a push.
And the unsigned Marquetti – with a lot of college coaches looking on – calmly dropped in both free throws for the victory.
*Mayfair’s strong perimeter, with returnee Mike Nwabuzor and Ocean View transfers Kendall Small and Dillon Reise (a game-high 23 points) leading the way, and defensive pressure, was too much for Rolling Hills Prep.
Rolling Hills was playing without senior transfer point guard Jackie Davis (whose eligibility has yet to be cleared), which hurt its ability to get the ball into its half-court offense. But junior center Jimbo Lull, after picking up three fouls in a first-quarter that ended with Mayfair up 21-2, eventually started getting his hands on the ball and scored 17 points.
*Compton seniors Kyron Cartwright, Isaiah Bailey and Iziahiah Sweeney provided just enough offense to enable the Tarbabes to hold off a strong effort by Narbonne’s unsigned senior guard, Ucheena Okeneme (33 points).
*Defending L.A. City champion Westchester utilized a strong senior class – including Loyola Marymount-signee Elijah Stewart – to cruise past Peninsula.
*Poly’s defensive pressure, led by Chris Sullivan, overwhelmed Missouri-bound Namon Wright and his Pacific Hills teammates.
Sullivan vs. Westchester’s Elijah Stewart could be one of Tuesday’s better individual matchups.
*The host Redondo Sea Hawks watched Morningside score the first six points of the contest before throttling the Monarchs with their defensive pressure and the overall play of one of the best unsigned senior point guards in the state, Ian Fox.
*St. John Bosco played without head coach Derrick Taylor (who couldn’t attend due to a “family emergency”) but was ably run by his staff (including Tamicha Kirby and Tony Miller).
The Braves, of course, had too much size and skill for Palos Verdes as senior Daniel Hamilton led the way 23 points while junior Tyler Dorsey added 22.
