CORONA, Ca. – Both the host Corona Centennial Huskies and the Etiwanda Eagles demonstrated they are very good teams during the first two days of the second Tip-Off at the Empire Invitational.
The tag to that sentence, of course, is: “As if anyone who follows high school basketball in Southern California didn’t know that already”.
OK, but just how good are the teams coached by Josh Giles and Dave Kleckner, respectively?
The Huskies (83-24 over Bakersfield East) and Eagles (61-47 over a game- and 3-point-shooting Great Oak squad) each improved to 2-zip Wednesday night and, minus stunners Friday – when the Huskies take on Fresno Central and Etiwanda tangles with Ranch Verde – should hook up in the championship game Saturday night at 7:45.
Yes, and that’s when we – and their head coaches – will have a better idea of just how good their squads are . . . at least a week into the 2013-14 season, that is.
Both have justifiable Southern Section and state championship ambitions and, barring something whacky happening between now and mid-February, are likely to find themselves as part of the Southern Section’s new “Open Division” instead of the 1-AA pool that they are part of right now.
Both squads are deep in experienced veterans and promising newcomers, as well.
The Huskies appear to have much more in the way of jump-shooting threats – most notably via Long Beach State-bound Deontae North as well as juniors Khalil Ahmad and Kyle Hamilton, along with sophomore Jordan Griffin.
But the Eagles counter with much stronger post-scoring threats, via returning starting senior Kenny Barnes and junior Kameron Edwards, a standout for the program’s junior varsity team last season.
Centennial’s defense is of the full-court, trapping and double-teaming variety while Etiwanda is much more zeroed in on locking into opponents with its determined-and-focused man-to-man.
The most obvious common denominator, however, is at the point guard position, where each is manned by among the best in the state, and beyond, with USC-bound senior Jordan McLaughlin the ringleader for Etiwanda and junior Sedrick Barefield, both of which scintillated when I watched Wednesday night.
It’s a long way until March, with section and state titles are going to be determined in earnest.
But the likely Saturday night showdown should provide a very nice preview for the kind of hoops that are going to be in store during the championship-determining portion of the season.
