GARDEN GROVE – The two USA 2014 squads didn’t have to endure a lot of stress Sunday night while cruising to semifinal victories to advance to Monday night’s championship game of the adidas Nations at Long Beach City College.

Six players cracked double-figure scoring for USA 2014-Red during its 96-71 victory over USA 2015/16-Red.

Leading the way was Santa Ana (CA) Mater Dei High forward Stanley Johnson, with 18 points, six rebounds and three assists.

Center Jahlil Okafor (Chicago Whitney Young) and forward Kevon Looney (Milwaukee Hamilton) added 12 points and 11 rebounds apiece for the 2014 team, which is coached by former NBA center Ralph Sampson.

In the other semifinal, forward Trey Lyles (Indianapolis Tech) scored a game-high 19 points and snatched six rebounds while guard D’Angelo Russell (Montverde, FL, Academy; but he’s from Louisville) added 17 points and three rebounds in USA 2014-Blue’s 78-61 decision over Team Africa.

Former UCLA and NBA forward – and current basketball TV and radio analyst – Don MacLean coaches the USA 2014-Blue club. He also guided the teams that won championships the past two seasons.

The championship game is scheduled to tip off at 6 o’clock (Pacific Time) Monday evening and will be televised by ESPNU.

The network will also broadcast the 4 o’clock third-place game between Team Africa and USA 2015/16-Red. There is no admission charged for the games.

The title game should feature – at least part of the games – a matchup between Okafor and 6-foot-10 Myles Turner (Euless, TX, Trinity), who are rated the top two center prospects in the national Class of 2014.

They face for the first time-ever on July 24 at Bishop Gorman High in Las Vegas, when Turner’s Texas Select squad edged Okafor’s Mac Irvin Fire during the Fab 48 Challenge.

It’s a reasonable expectation that as many as a dozen players between the teams competing for the title Monday night will be selected to the 2014 McDonald’s All-American squad.

Along with Lyles and Russell (who is committed to Ohio State), Reid Travis (Minneapolis De La Salle) – one of the top half-dozen or so power forwards in the Class of 2014 – was also quite impressive over the weekend for MacLean’s squad.

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
