My choices for “best of the best” at Pangos No. 11

LONG BEACH, Ca. – The 11th version of the Pangos All-American Camp wrapped up mid-Sunday afternoon at Cabrillo High.

A couple of years’ worth of hindsight – at least two college seasons and one NBA draft – will provide some reasonable perspective as to really how “good” No. 11 was.

But the immediate inclination – at least on my part – is to suggest that the players in the camp, as a collective, could end up holding up pretty well against those in attendance at the first 10 sessions.

A survey of media- and scouting-types in attendance by event founder and director Dinos Trigonis resulted in Stanley Johnson (Santa Ana, CA, Mater Dei) getting the nod as the “Player of the Camp” with Emmanuel Mudiay (Dallas, TX, Prime Prep) and Rashad Vaughn (New Hope, MN,  Robbinsdale Cooper) share top performer honors for the Top 30 All-Star Game.

I’m alright by those choices, although Mudiay (the most serious challenger to Tyus Jones of Minnesota for the No. 1 tag at point guard in the Class of 2014), Vaughn (every bit the “pure scorer” that Johnson is) or Chris McCullough of Wolfeboro, NH, Brewster Academy (committed to Syracuse) could have received the “top player” tag and it shouldn’t have caused calamity to break out in the gym.

My pick as the top underclassman at the event was a player who made his “national debut” at the event as an eighth grader two years ago – Stephen Zimmerman of Bishop Gorman in Las Vegas.

I doubt many who watched all three days of the event would have debated very passionately in opposition to that choice.

Anyway, without further ado, here are my choices (not “hard and fast”, just based on the way they played when I tried to zero in on the games they played Friday, Saturday and Sunday) for the guys who most impressed me over the weekend. These lists are not necessarily the “best prospects” – I thought some very good “prospects” didn’t play as well as they were capable over the weekend, for a variety of reasons.

The “surprise seniors” list is made up of players whose national “profiles” weren’t nearly as pronounced as many of the other players in attendance.

The lists are alphabetical and include the players’ sizes, high schools and camp teams:

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
