BEVERLY HILLS, Ca. – Some of the better high school hoops players from across Southern California gathered at Beverly Hills High Saturday morning.

The occasion was “Double Pump Media Day”, an opportunity for the players directly or indirectly part of the teams overseen by David and Dana Pumps to scrimmage and run through drills in front of 10 or so reporters from Internet sites or newspapers – and then to learn a little about how the soundest ways of dealing with “media” members.

They were also offered insight about the caution that must be used in interacting in “social media” outlets, most notably Twitter.

The players in attendance included:

*Pump-N-Run Elite representatives included 6-foot-9 Evan Fitzner (San Diego Parker), 6-0 Kyron Cartwright (Compton), 5-10 Maleke Haynes (Woodland Hills El Camino Real), 6-7 Sam Jones (Gilbert, AZ, Christian) and 6-7 Devenir Duruisseau (Sylmar).

*The Double Pump Elite 16-Under squad features one of the most noteworthy freshmen in the west – and, in reality, beyond – and 6-9 Trevor Stanback (West Hills Chaminade) gave those watching him, and playing against him, a couple of hours’ worth of reasons why Saturday.

*Among those from Pump-N-Run Power participating were 5-11 Kelton Conway and 6-9 Blair Orr (both from El Camino Real) and 6-8 Terrell Carter (West Torrance).

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
