CORONA, Ca. – If a survey had been taken just minutes before the start of the “Ballislife Magic Memorial Day Festival” Saturday morning, which team would have been the consensus to win the event’s top (Battle Zone 17) division?
Well, the Dream Vision (17) squad, led by the preeminent post player in the western U.S. of A. (Stephen Zimmerman of Bishop Gorman in Las Vegas), would have been a strong possibility.
So would have the Branch West team (which won the Pangos Spring Sweet 16), Compton Magic Select (and its roster of 2015 standouts), L.A. Rockfish (with dandy point guard Robert Cartwright and center Thomas Welsh) or Superior Athletes (and their slick guards from the 2015 class).
But each of those projections would have proved faulty.
That’s because the winner Monday – by way of running through three pool-play contests and four playoff games – proved to be another member of the “Magic family”, the Compton Magic Elite.
After knocking off Dream Vision (16) and Compton Select on Sunday afternoon and evening, respectively, the squad came back to handle Superior Athletes by 14 points and then Dream Vision (17) by 18 in the finale on Monday afternoon to bag the 16-team field.
The constant full-court pressing and trapping defense, and a fast-passed offensive attack, proved too much for any opponent to cope with.
And the team’s offensive output was about as balanced as “balanced” could be.
Each starter – guard Kodi Justice of Mesa, AZ, Dobson, with 17 points; forward Isaiah Bailey of Compton, with 15; and guards Victor Joseph (Rancho Cucamonga) and Justin Bibbins (Torrance Bishop Montgomery) and forward Deontae North (Corona Centennial) with 10 each – scored in double figures.
Justice is one of the best jump shooters in the west; Joseph and Bibbins are two of the better point guards in California and Bailey is as explosive, vertically, a player as you’ll find on the high school level.
And no one played any harder than North during the weekend.
The 6-foot-11 Zimmerman, who has two seasons’ worth of prep eligibility remaining, led Dream Vision with 17 points – most of those coming on uncontested (more or less) dunks following the handful of times his team was able to pass through the Compton Magic Elite pressure.
Other standouts in the bracket (along with the aforementioned players) included 6-3 freshman guard Lonzo Ball (Chino Hills High/QJZ Elite); 6-9 junior Jacob Hammond (Bel Aire, KS, Sunrise Christian/Oklahoma Magic); 6-3 junior Casey Benson (Tempe, AZ, Corona del Sol/Arizona Power Black 17); 5-11 junior Devin Watson (San Diego Army-Navy/Pangos Elite); 6-10 sophomore Chance Comanche (Los Angeles View Park/Elite Prospect); 5-11 junior Devonte Klines (Santa Margarita/Dream Vision 17); junior guards Jeremy Hemsley (La Verne, CA, Damien), Stephen Thompson Jr. (Bishop Montgomery) and Kendall Small (Huntington Beach Ocean View); 6-8 sophomore Chase Jeter (Bishop Gorman); 6-3 sophomore Jeffrey McClendon (Pasadena/Pangos Silver); and 5-10 Gino Littles (Scottsdale, AZ, Desert Mountain/Arizona Stars Elite).
In the 16 division, Arizona Power Red edged Team Zona, 55-54, in overtime.
And, in the 15 division, Mike Bibby’s “Team Bibby” cruised past Arizona Power Black, 73-47.
