Comanche helps L.A. team rally past O.C. counterpart

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Ca. – Eight hours of hoop-di-do at Marina High Saturday during the Southern California Spring Showcase culminated they should have – with the two best teams having at each other.

In a game of “runs”, the Los Angeles-based Elite Prospects Inc. pulled away down the stretch for a 61-56 victory over South Orange County’s Team Eastbay.

Elite Prospects was up by 11 points before the Orange County club scored the final six points of the first half to get to within 31-26 at intermission.

Led by two of the better juniors in Orange County, 6-foot-3 point guard George Buaku of El Toro and 6-6 wing Chandler Hutchison of Mission Viejo, as well as the jump shooting of 6-5 senior Jimmy Golden of Sonora in La Habra, Team Eastbay continued its run in the second half and bolted to a 14-point advantage (49-35) with a bit more than seven minutes to go.

Six-ten Chance Comanche struggled to score (other than on follow shots) but, with at least a half-dozen blocked shots – a couple of those on mid-range jump shots – and probably twice that many rebounds, he impacted the outcome more than any other Elite Prospects player.

Team Eastbay’s lack of depth also contributed heavily to the outcome – it suited up just six players after 6-6 Santa Margarita junior Brett Oosdyke suffered a blow to the jaw against Southern California All-Stars 17s in its first game a few hours earlier.

Oosdyke, with “concussion-like” symptoms, went home while his teammates rested for an hour or so before the contest with Elite Prospects, which – with 10 players – subbed frequently in the final game.

Winn (an all-L.A. City selection) and Golden (an all-Southern Section choice) were just two of the impressive seniors who were on hand Saturday – which is why community college head coaches such as Andy Ground (Saddleback), Dave Breig (Santa Ana) and Steve Spencer (Orange Coast) watched a lot of the action.

Other members of the Class of 2013 who impressed Saturday included 6-3 Josh Armstrong (Fountain Valley High/So Cal Grind); 6-4 Roland Wyatt (Gardena Serra High/Fastbreak Seniors Black); 5-10 Troy Batiste (L.A. Westchester/Fastbreak Sports Seniors Black); 6-6 Andrew Tisdale (Mater Dei/Southern California All-Stars Red); 6-4 ½ Nnadi Udengwu (Diamond Ranch/Step Up Sports); and 6-7 Greg Karapoulios (Long Beach St. Anthony/Team Bulldogs 17).

Armstrong – the Sunset League Most Outstanding Player this past season – played just one game Saturday but was impressive as anyone who participated. He did pretty much anything he wanted against the team with Wyatt and Batiste, including knock in jumpers or penetrate to score, and create for teammates, at will.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
