DALLAS, TX – Though the VIP Exclusive Run didn’t feature the same kind of elite talent some of the weekend’s other events offered, the Dallas tournament had prospects worth discussing.
Here are several of the players who stood out in the adidas Tournament.
Brandone Francis (2014/Florida Elite/Arlington Country Day/Jacksonville, FL)
James Says: The 6-5 guard’s consistently stellar decision-making out of the dribble-drive gives him the ability to play the point. He has a well-developed understanding of when and how to get the ball to a teammate in an advantageous scoring position. Francis is comfortable pulling up from midrange and beyond the arc, knocking down shots if given space. While not flashy, his steady brilliance throughout the tournament has made him a sought-after prospect.
Craig Victor (2014/New Orleans Elite/St. Augustine/New Orleans, LA)
James Says: Victor has the size and skill to be the focal point of an offense from the high post. The 6-8 forward showed a proficiency for post entries and for finding open teammates spotting up on the wing. He draws the defense’s attention at the foul line because of his ability to score or get to the foul line off a few dribbles. He also impressed with his consistent effort at the event.
Mario Kegler (2016/MBA Hoops 17U/Callaway/Jackson, MS)
James Says: Kegler is a class of 2016 guard who stands an impressive 6-6. He handles the ball well for his size and age, even showing the ability to split a double-team by going behind the back. Kegler can also pull up from midrange and shoot over his defender with a high release and good arc on his shot.
Stephen Zimmerman (2015/Dream Vision 17U/Bishop Gorman/Las Vegas, NV)
James Says: The mobile seven-footer’s midrange game and shot-blocking were on full display in the Exclusive Run. Zimmerman consistently converted midrange baskets after facing up. Because of his height, and the fact that defenders have to respect his ability to attack off the dribble, his jumpers are difficult to contest. He also displayed a more refined post game, including an up-and-under from about eight feet out.
DeJuan Piper (2014/Team Bradley Northwest Panthers/Rainier Beach/Seattle, WA)
James Says: The 6-8 Piper has good speed and threatens opponents in transition because he can finish above the rim or make open three-pointers. Piper’s motor makes him someone defenders have to constantly be conscious of.
Rex Pflueger (2015/Compton Magic Select/Mater Dei/San Juan Capistrano, CA)
James Says: Pflueger got into a rhythm from three-point range at times throughout the weekend and showed onlookers how much of an outside threat he can be. The 6-5 wing has a lightning-quick release off the catch. While he still needs to add strength, he’s noticeably improved as a finisher. Pflueger recently transferred to Mater Dei (Santa Ana, CA) from JSerra in San Juan Capistrano.
Mitchell Wilbekin (2014/Florida Elite/The Rock/Gainesville, FL)
James Says: The younger brother of the Gators’ guard, Wilbekin always played under control and his leadership was a key factor in his team going 5-0 in the tournament. He facilitated well and, while lacking top-level quickness, scored when he needed to through his excellent change of speed and direction from the top of the key.
