ANAHEIM, Ca. – The Santa Ana Mater Dei Monarchs rolled into Saturday night’s CIF Southern Section 1AA championship game with a 30-1 record.
They were largely untested during the first rounds of the playoffs, knocking Eastvale Roosevelt, Downey Warren, Moreno Valley Rancho Verde and Inglewood by an average margin of 23.5 points.
But they were “tested” in the Anaheim Convention Center Arena – and then some.
The Etiwanda Eagles used their half-court defense and a balanced offensive attacked paced by junior guard Jordan McLaughlin to dominate most of the way, moving to as much as a 17-point advantage with about six minutes to go in the fourth quarter.
But they needed to hold off the frantic comeback of the Monarchs, holding off collective breath as junior forward Stanley Johnson came up short on a 3-point that would have tied the score with a second to go and winning, 54-51.
The Monarchs hit just nine of 34 shots from the floor over the first three quarters but clicked on seven of 15 in the final stanza – most of those over the final four or so minutes.
It capped a remarkable week for Coach Dave Kleckner’s program – the Eagles held off host and No. 2 seed Poly in Long Beach (59-55, in overtime) Tuesday night to set the stage for Saturday night.
McLaughlin scored 14 points (none in the final 12 minutes or so), including a couple of NBA-like 3-pointers in the first half, while junior forward Kenny Barnes added 16 and sophomore swingman Delewis Johnson had 12.
Elijah Brown scored 21 points and Stanley Johnson added 18 but each was generally well defended well throughout the contest. Senior Jordan Strawberry scored 10 points and did a solid enough defensive job against McLaughlin. He was also the sparkplug in the comeback.
The teams could get a rematch two weeks hence, in a possible State Southern Regional Open Division final in San Bernardino.
The Northern and Southern brackets will be unveiled Sunday evening.
In other games Saturday during my 14-hour stint in the building:
1A: Santa Monica 66, El Toro 56: The Vikings outscored the Chargers 20-5 in the second quarter and that provided them with more than enough cushion.
El Toro, which was the bracket’s No. 1 seed (to Santa Monica’s No. 2), got to within three points of the Vikings with about two minutes to go. But Coach Todd Dixon’s team could get no closer than that.
Senior guard Trevis Jackson led Santa Monica with 17 points and added five rebounds and three steals.
California-bound guard Jordan Mathews added 13 points (despite missing 14 of 18 shots from the floor) and grabbed 10 rebounds.
2AA: JW North 59, Villa Park 58: The top-ranked Huskies led by as many as 16 points in the closing seconds of the third quarter but had to watch the Spartans turn the ball over before a potential game-winning shot after an inbounds from in front of the Villa Park bench.
Pacing the comeback were the junior combination of 6-3 guard Luke Selway (who finished 16 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and four steals) and 6-10 center Lamont Tyler (who scored 14 of his game-high points in the final eight minutes).
Senior Dorian Butler (whose father, Kelvin, helped the Huskies win a SS title in 1984) led the winners with 16 points and grabbed six rebounds.
2A: Redondo 68, Westlake 63: The Redondo Union High administration’s decision to offer Reggie Morris Jr. the opportunity to take over its program last spring has paid major dividends.
The Sea Hawks knocked off the division’s top seed to collect a Southern Section title in their first season under Morris, who also had SS championships at his previous two head-coaching stops, Leuzinger in Lawndale and St. Bernard in Playa Del Rey.
Guards Derek Biale and Ian Fox, whose open-court skill flourished under Morris, combined for 37 points with the senior Biale (19) hitting four shots behind the arc.
Fox, a junior who could be recruited in the spring and summer by Division I college programs, added six assists and two steals.
Senior center Sebastian Lindner had 10 points and nine rebounds while sophomore forward Jeremiah Headley came off the bench for 15 points and seven rebounds.
Seniors Larry Bush and Grant Lozoya scored 18 apiece for the Warriors.
Morris is believed to be the first Southern Section coach to win boys’ basketball championships at three different schools.
4AA: Serra 70, La Verne Lutheran 52: The Cavaliers had little to no problem knocking off the team that beat the squad that was considered a near-lock in the division (Torrance Bishop Montgomery), which beat Serra three times in the regular season.
Transfers Ajon Efferson (15 points and four assists) and Ron Freeman (16 points and six rebounds), both juniors, combined for 31 points for Coach Dwan Hurt’s squad.
The Cavaliers are likely to get a fourth opportunity to beat Bishop Montgomery during Division IV Southern Regional action that gets underway next week.
Skyler Williams had 20 points (hitting four of seven behind the arc) for the Trojans, who also advance to regional action.
3A: St. John Bosco 80, Chaminade 56: The Eagles got to within six points at intermission but the first tilt of the day was never really competitive to the point of believing Chaminade had a real shot at beating the Braves.
The brothers Isaac (a game-high 23 points on 10 of 18 shooting from the field) and Daniel (14 points and a game-high seven assists) Hamilton got plenty of support from sophomore Tyler Dorsey (20 points, six rebounds and three assists) to propel the Braves.
Senior transfers Brian Nebo from Gahr (six points and 12 rebounds) and Darien Williams from Orange Lutheran (14 points and nine rebounds) turned in their best performances of the playoffs.
Junior forward Jack Williams (16 points and six rebounds) and freshman center Trevor Stanback (eight points, nine rebounds and four blocks) had their moments for the Eagles but senior guard Jeron Martin hit just three of 17 shots from the field en route to 13 points.
